The tasks of these dogs is so different you should let the type of shooting take presidence. The lab is a retriever the cocker a hunter, Can't see a cocker retrieving a large Goose from a fast flow and equally daft is the throught of a Lab stuck fast in the middle of a an overgrown hedge

All the Springadors I have seen have been so loyal and switched on that I am aiming to get one as soon as my *** settles in one place - (later this year maybe!)

Good compromise between the two breeds and as its a first cross they rarely have any of the genetic problems of the two breeds.

Its a big choice getting a dog, make sure before you do it... :good:

lost my black lab on the 21 august and i already have 2 year old cockador my son now started shooting so need another dog not sure which to get a cocker or another black lab cant make up my mind

Had the same decision to make myself last month and ended up with a black lab. The type of shooting you do has a major bearing on your decision but so can the individual dog within a breed. Luckily I found a small Lab dog that had a great nose and loved getting into the thick of it (once he has a scent). So in summary I would say :-

1. Cocker for rough shooting (hunting)

2. Lab for outright rertrieivng work though you may be lucky and get one that will hunt once it picks a sent up but they will never hunt anywhere

near as well as a cocker or an ESS.

My dog had to live in the house and would be a pet as well. This was the final factor that swung the Lab for me.

Hope this helps ?

ESS....The Maid of all work...

A well trained dog is the most versatile dog available in the field, Hunts like a Bloodhound, Points like a Pointer, Flushes like a toilet, retreaves like a retriever, swims like an otter.

And will do so all day well into its later life if properly looked after.

Also very adaptable in the home. ;)

Have you ever seen a pointer or bloodhound at work? :hmm: many dogs are versitile but non can match the specialists at thier vocation, though i assume you were just flowering things up a bit

Yep all working Springers will point if trained and I had a English Pointer in 78. They also have a nose as good as a bloodhound. You dont see any Bloodhounds in the Airport serching for drugs and explosives :P:lol:

Yep was flowering it up a bit but the text is basically taken from a 1940,s book of the ESS along with the following.

"It is prized by hunters because it can take on many different hunting roles. A keen and active creature with a good nose, it works well both on land and water, as well as in any weather".

"It excels at hunting in the thickest cover of the woods and underbrush, and is vigorous and intelligent in its search for prey, and has a nose unmatched by many hound. Moreover, this spaniel marks and points well and is a superb retriever on land and in water. It is ideal for the lone hunter and a great companion."

Labs and Rets are ok if you are going a bit Blind or want something to fetch the slippers :lol:
