deako01
I am new to this so looking for some advice. Arrived at my permission on Saturday about 9am and about 60-80 birds lifted off a patch of Maize which had just been flattened. Set up about 20 shells about 40 yards away from the old cover crop on a freshly drilled field and got my hide set up amongest some hay bales. For some reason nothing was interested in the decoys, I have a mix of flock and non flocked so not sure if this is putting them off. Eventually got the magnet up and running but even that wasnt working. Someone was getting some sport in the next field so clearly I am doing something wrong! Any advice gratefully received. deny essex
Personaly i would have decoyed on the maize, it is quite possible the other gun was shooting at the birds further down your incomming flightline which would have made the birds very twitchy to your setup. Its not an easy one to answer. But mixing flock and normal decoys is not usualy a problem , i do the same.
Cranfield
I would also have put the decoys on the maize, thats what the birds would have been feeding on.
miapia221
I would have put decoys on the mazie also, if they had been feeding on the mazie would have come back into your decoys better

If they did'nt come after that, I would have pulled all of the decoys in, left the dead birds on the magnet and only put dead birds on the ground building the pattern as I went along. proTOM1
Idont really think it has anything to do with being on the maize it self as for years before the magnet i setup on the ground near the maize as the decoys were seen better but the biggest thing is did the birds really wont to be there or were they just there as the other gun had sent them there it may of been better to sit and watch for a while to see what was really happening before setting up , but like sid they could of been shot at by the other guy before they got to you , keep trying
cocker3
yup with protom sounds like the birds were in the other guns pattern first and were flighting over you but were to spooked to drop in.but if you could give more info ie wind direction strength how far apart were you to shooting ie 1 field or 5 fields apart all these thing would help people to get a better view of what is going on atb andy

deako01
Really appreciate all the advice so far. In the morning no one else was shooting so clearly I must be doing something wrong with my pattern. I did think about setting up in the maize but couldnt see anywhere to put the hide and thought the hay bales would offer the most cover. Difficult to explain the set up but maize strip to my left and the wind was coming over the top of the maize (across my hide left to right) so moved the pattern around tried L shape and also the horse shoe. 0nce the birds lifted they went and sat in a copse of woods to my right but they just wouldnt decoy. Thought I was in for a good day when I saw them on the maize but clearly I need to sort out my field craft. Moved all my kit in the afternoon into the wood but again I only got some roost shooting as they didnt like what they saw. Cheers,
