mtelfo
hi all first post here so mods if this is in the wrong section please move. quick history, im 24 and i have been shooting pigeons since i was about 9 its my bread and butter really because it is cheap unlike driven ect. im in the raf so i move about alot, i currently live in oxfordshire inbetween reading and oxford. i have just got about 100 acres of winter rape wich has been hammered but doesnt seem to be anymore. the farmer is adiment that everyday he sees hundreds of pigeons in it but when ever i go over for a look they arnt there but he wants me to shoot that field. ive only had the permission a week so i dont want to rock the boat. what do you suggest keep pushing that its the wrong field or just keep him sweet for the time being till i have my foot in the door? cheers in advance matt
The Duncan
Have you spent a day there? If not, get comfy and see what time the blighters are coming in! A couple of field near me are mostly empty when I drive by, but at certain times the place is blue/grey with them! You can't always get this info with the odd drive-by. AlistairB
I had the same issue with one of my farmers, go up and have a look for evidence of pigeons, get into the field and check leaves etc, if you cant spend all day there, go up at different times of day. My farmer was right, generally they are, as they're there when you're not. AB
FalconFN
If the farmer says they're there then they probably are. I'd make a point of sitting and watching when they are likely to feed, and make sure he knows you are there putting in the hours. If you've only had it a week I'd keep him sweet by making the effort, also gives you a better chance of getting a decent days shooting. mtelfo
I have shot there twice. First time I shot 15 for too many shots lol. When I got there, there was about 60 in the trees but they ******** off with no return the second time I shot ten for 20 shots similar story but only four on the field. I went and sat there first thing Saturday for 30 mins and nothing then re visited a couple of hours later for nearly a hour and still not alot. I have alread found the flight lines and roost points in and around the fields but i'm restricted to hide positions by a foot path on one side and two houses on either side so I have to set up in a awkward position! It's a pain going to go again Friday afternoon after work or Saturday morn before the wife starts work

They spin that yarn to get you to be there all the time, in your own time, at your own expense, keeping pigeons off their crops. I have one on my shoot. He's always going on about thousands of pigeons on his land yet one bang and they are gone for hours. Also the farmer doesn't provide any crop protection himself, no banger, no gas gun and no flags. He expects us to do all that. He's now on about getting a pro' in yet doesn't seem to realise that a pro' either needs paying or will expect to be able to sell more then half a dozen pigeons in a day. Best option is to look for more land while keeping him sweet. Buy a dozen banger ropes and make three or four flags or scarecrows then pop round every day you can to move the flags around and put a string of bangers out every couple of days. mtelfo
He is a good bloke and has gas guns ect but they don't work! I can see where he is coming from it's just frustrating! I nee to do a bit miter recce I think
mtelfo
Well I have just been up there for a look at first light and walked 60 off the field ten mins later they had all come back in ones and twos then bang went the gas gun. They all ******** off then again within ten mins they were back in their ones and twos! Only problem is that they arnt in the best place to shoot if I walked them off and set up 70-80 yards away would I draw them in? To the new spot? mtelfo
All the basics just no magnet. Got a friend making me one lol. In my fifteen years I haven't shot much winter rape I mainley shot over stubble or roost shot. I'm guessing they would as long as my pattern was good enough

I didnt find them to be any better or worse than flock coated shell decoys.
mtelfo
Yeah like the look of them as space savers. Alot of my fields are a long walk from the car so like to cut down on **** that takes up room. Sillosocks too! But they are pricey.
UKPoacher
Sillosocks are £3.90 plus £1.30 for the optional head, flocked deeks can be anything from £3 to £5.20 dependent on whether you want shells or full bodied. There's nothing in it. I'd rather carry a dozen Sillisocks than a dozen full bodied deeks any day.
FalconFN
Fuds work and take up less space but they are heavy compared to shells.
mtelfo
Motto bothered about weight more space. I have a nice rucksack which is comfy to carry heavy loads just don't like it hanging off every limb! Lol might have a look into silosocks again
