hushpower or semi auto?

The two are very different animals and have completely different uses -

If you said you wanted BOTH these guns then that would make sense.....

Semis (all of them) need fairly quick loads to make them cycle consistently, whereas unless you use subsonic shot shells in a moderated shotty you are defeating the object.

If you want rugged and reliable then a hushpower would fit, but why .410? 20 or even 12g are much easier to get shells for ....?

Hatsans are like Marmite, you love or hate them, and whilst they have a very devoted following they are right at the very bottom of the quality scale of semi-autos. They CAN shell fussy and have varied reports of reliability - Although to be fair the one I had only had one part break and that was a common fault due to cheap engineering.

i am looking to buy either a 12 bore hatsan escort shotgun or a hushpower moderated .410 for vermin control i want a gun that is rugged and notlikely to go wrong as my pockets are not very deep!!! if anyone has any help it would be much appreciated. cheers

There was a 12g Hushpower listed in the for sale section not so long back, around £200 or £250 if I remember.

If I wasn't still waiting on my SGC I'd have bought it.

410 Carts are considrably dearer per bang than 12g so running costs are higher.

I wanted a .410 as i thought it would be quiet enough to shoot rats and crows in my garden without the neighbours complaning!

They're quiet, but not that quiet.

If you want something versatile, why not buy the Mossberg Hushpower kit ? You get a Mossberg 500a 12g with multichoke 28" barrel and a Hushpower barrel too. The barrel takes 10 seconds to change without tools. It's a 3" magnum gun, so with the standard barrel you can shoot all sorts, including ducks, and with the hushpower barrel and hushpower subsonic cartridges you can control rabbits and pigeons without upsetting the whole area ( not in your garden though ).

Bit confused as to what you want to use the gun for.... if you were a bit clearer maybe some more usefull advice would follow.

If it's just rats in the garden... why even think about an auto ?

Don't know about the legalities of shooting crows in the garden .....

How big is the garden ?

If it's just rats, then consider an air rifle....

Remember , no shot or pellets must leave your boundry....and you could end up in deep **** if your gun going off scares or startles your neighbours, so be wary of any shotgun.

The guns you mention are two entirely different beasts, both usefull in their own right ...

But tell us what shooting you plan to do.

I already have an air rifle which i use to shoot rats and crows with in my garden. My garden is a fair size id say around half an acre and i have a permission which has lots of crows and rooks on it. I wanted a gun that i could use on my permission to shoot with and use in my garden as im not a brilliant shot with my air rifle! But shooting in my garden doesnt matter to much as my permission boundary is just across the road from my house and so i would be able to control the crows from somewhere else and would just stick to using the air rifle around my garden. So which gun would you recommend?

Be safe and stick to the air rifle for the garden, at least you wont upset the neighbours to much.

The 410 is a very capable little tool, but as you have a permission maybe a 12 would be more usefull in the long run.

Unless you've got your heart set on an auto, a SxS or O/U would do you just as well and would probably be more reliable... though the two shooters i know with Hatsans have had no trouble with theirs, maybe they just keep them clean..... Though i'd still start off with either a SxS or O/U .... they will see you through any game or rough shooting situation you will meet.

As others have said, 2 very different guns for 2 different jobs really. Firstly, id forget about using the husbpower .410 in your garden. Ive tried it in my (large) garden and its very loud... mainly because the noise echos off any hedges / buildings. So, for garden use, stick to the air rifle like I do.

Out in the field, the hushpower is very quiet and comes more into its own. Ive the mossberg pump hushpower in .410 and its ideal for rabbits if your shooting from a vehicle, or if you are just wandering around the fields. Would be great for rooks / crows etc.

But, if your mainly using the gun in the field, then a 12bore would be better. .410 cartridges are twice the price of 12bore, and a 12bore could be used for pretty much anything... in the field or down the clay range. You mention the hatsan... which some people love, others hate. But for the cash, you`ll be struggling to get another semi for that sort of money. Maybe a 2nd hand beretta 303, and I think theres even a baikal semi ive seen for similar cash. So, maybe a s/s or o/u would be a better buy? You can get a nice s/s for £150 or less, and ive bought good o/u`s for a similar price in the past. At that money unless you buy a pig, the gun will hold its value, so you can always trade it in for a semi in the future once you have saved enough cash.

Please forgive me for not reading previous posts I'm on my lunch. I have the mossberg 500 hushpower in 20ga it's a cracking bit of kit and fits nicely between .410 and 12ga in terms of poke and noise reduction plus you can remove mod and shoot clays. I have heard moderated semis are not much good, firstly due to auto cartridge ejection they expell gas and noise out of the side of the weapon making it louder than a pump. Also due to the mod the gas re circulation is affected and causes regular jamming. Atb Dave

Other option (not for garden) would be a 12G pump Mossberg hushpower. 1/2 an acre with close neighbours is not ideal for a shotgun there are 9mm Garden guns (rare but cheap) http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/100313145356971 and shells are cheaper than .410 pop in and see if your local RFD has one and stocks shells.

As rugged and not likely to wrong then cheap semi's are not the way to go a SxS or O/U is as simple as it gets and Baikal are robust and cheap! I would say a SxS 12G for birds and 9mm for rats (or just get better with airgun) will work out cheaper and more reliable! http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/101023165124001
