Stratts
Hi guys, I'm applying for my SGC solely to shoot pigeons on a farm I currently have permission for air rifle hunting. I've been roost shooting pigeons (.22 air rifle) this winter with limited success and have been studying flight lines, decoy patterns, etc in readiness for a shotgun. I have a small amount of clay pigeon shooting experience and know how to handle a shotgun safely and I'll also be going out with a friend soon for a days pigeon shooting. What would you recommend I buy for this purpose. I have a pretty limited budget as I'm going FAC coterminus too which most of my dosh will be going on. Looked at the Hatsan and Baikel semi auto's at the Newark show but I'm quite a big unit at 6ft3 and have long arms so not sure what will be suited for me? Any thoughts, Cheers Stratts
deny essex
Both hatsan and baikal are rugged guns and suitable for pigeon shooting , its realy a matter of what shoulders well to you and feels right, most respectble gun shops will give you good advice on your purchase. I have owned browning , berretta etc but now happy to shoot with a hatsan 3.5 inch synthetic semi auto, i have the 3.5 inch to cover the odd bit of wildfowling i do but its not a nessesary requirement for pigeon shooting. Thousands of rounds have gone through it over 4 years with a respectable bit of punishment and neglect, mud on the synthectic stock and forend just run under the tap and dry off, no barrel blueing to worry about so just a straight wipedown. Its never let me down and only hiccups when ive neglected cleaning it for too long. They are what you pay for, rough and rugged in comparison to much more exspensive guns but with the warranty they give i think good value for money. Stratts
Thanks mate I quite like the camo hatsan and I won't be using it too much so sounds just the job for me. I'll have to see how they fit when my cert comes through
twitchynik
I'll have to see how they fit when my cert comes through Don't let a silly bit of paper stop you from going to a gun shop and kicking their tyres! Get down there, shoulder loads of guns and build up a rapor with the shop keeper
vampire
Don't let a silly bit of paper stop you from going to a gun shop and kicking their tyres! Get down there, shoulder loads of guns and build up a rapor with the shop keeper As above Gun fit is everything,my first shotgun,a baikal o/u didnt fit and hurt my fingers every time i pulled a trigger ,hatans are ok but you will use a lot of shells,o/u prefered by clay shooters and sxs for rough shooters, personly a semi auto is easy/safe to load in a hide,so i would say go for your hatsan if thats your budget

Catweazle
Beretta semis ( and I think the Hatsan too ) are adjustable for cast and drop, via spacers between action and stock. This might help if you are outside of normal dimensions or have a special requirement ( like me - smashed up collar bone ).
