andystone
my airgun is a cometa 220. does that help with the silencer question?
Slipster
my airgun is a cometa 220. does that help with the silencer question? If you go to your local gunshop they will fit you up with a Silencer that slips over the end and grubscrewed inplace. Slipster
Dead-Eyed Duck
Andy Get to know the buzz words pal. 'Silencers' are known as sound moderators ('moderators). Talking of silencers makes plod very twitchy - silent assassins and things. Other than that - the advice that others have given is excellent. bindi
Rubbish, dead eyed duck!!! everyone calls them silencers on air rifles. How often do you see 'moderators' advertised in airgunner???, but there are plenty of ads for silencers, and the plods don't complain, so lets not confuse the lad hey!! most people know them as moderators on firearms!! Now then, you can get a webley pro-system silencer that is multi fit, slides over the end of your barrell and tightens on without a grub srew. They are friction fit and come with a set of different sized sleeves. All you need to do first is remove the foresight. There are other types too, good luck Edited March 12, 2006 by bindi
Dead-Eyed Duck
Stand corrected Bindi. Apart from your comment re air rifles - on an FAC air rifle they're called moderators. Don
edd
sorry but i have to agree with bindi ( does it matter what they are called i always call them silencers and thats what they are ) they are also sound mods but its just a diffrent name ) so in my opion it dont matter edd
milo_05
"Apart from your comment re air rifles - on an FAC air rifle they're called moderators." No that's just A name, you can call them supressors, mods, moderators, can's or silencers. You don't use them differently depending on the weapon, it's just what you like to use and how formal you want to be.

Devilishdave
Its like cows and cattle, there is a subtle differance but maters not when you are describing what you saw in the field. One thing that realy grips my **** is people who go off on one when you call a rifle a gun explaining a gun is smooth bore and fires at a steap angle of elevation which has so many technical anommalies you could drive a tank through it with its 120mm rifled barrel fitted. milo_05
I just don't like the agressive tone, "get to know the buzzwords PAL" like he's an idiot. It doesn't matter what you call them aswell as the fact the meaning got through anyway.
bindi
Yep, I just try to help out where I can, just like many have helped me in the past. I alsways keep it simple, not getting bogged down by purist terms and just enjoy the shooting, and the fiddling with guns.....fiddling being an approved technical terms for wasting time, annoying the wife, making a mess and getting grease everywhere!!! keep it light! roblade
i thought the moderators (cranfield and the others) do a good job of keeping things quiet on here but silencers are most commonly used on airguns, rimfire rifles and some center fire rifles, the more expensive silencers are called moderators and are used on most center fire rifles. I guess the reason they are called moderators and not silencers would be due to the noise the rifle makes with a moderator fitted ( i certainly wouldnt call it silenced ) as for fitting one to a cometa 220 couple of quick questions: 1. do you have a scope mounted? 2. does it have a fore sight, that can be removed? as for which silencer would be best i think you can still get a webly silencer that has different collars to enable it to be fitted to any diameter barrel, its not the best there is but better than nothing and wont break the bank. milo_05
Also on that cometa the twang of the spring would make more noise than the pellet leaving so I wouldn't bother with one. Practice well then get a cheap pcp and use that I would say.

As for choice of silencer well I'm out of sync with whats available on the market at the mo so can't really help Ive

Same here bindi! I get told off for leaving gun magazines in the loo, getting gun grease in the carpet, leaving tools every where.. I love to fiddle around with gun parts.. can spend hours and hours working on the most simple thing, or swap all the scopes around on the airguns etc Talking of light silencers, I sometimes use this on the Rabbitstopper
bindi
Nice one, just for interest, I have spent the last hour and half trying to get a b@stard little spring back into a rekord trigger unit. Anyway now its done and I feel mighty proud for my fiddling. Plenty of cursing helped the whole process along. Wife thinks I'n completely mad, but she's only half right. now I'm smug, cos its refittted and works!!! HA fiddling, ,,,when its too cold for shooting and there's nothing to sh@g,,,,, you can't beat it!!!!! Now for a bottle of newky brown. yup

Hunter
I hope your talking about gun fiddling there I spend around a week building a stainless steel trigger for the above airgun. Tiny trigger, hours and hours of work though.. But yeh, if it sucks outside, its nice just to work on your tools before they go out to work.
