Flashy
Im going to start Clay Pigeon shooting in the near future and not being particularily rich I cant afford much (if any) in the way of lessons. Given that pestering the shooters around me with daft questions might be frowned upon I thought I should at least do some reasearch/learning before I start. Can anyone recommend any decent books and/or DVDs or indeed websites that they have found useful for beginners like me. I will mostly doing Sporting style clay pigeon shooting with an O/U. Yes I have googled lots.... but there is lots of stuff and I end up going around in circles! I have done a litte Clay shooting before and have 16 years of military shooting behind me so im not an absolute beginner and at least know which end of the big stick the shot comes out of and not to go around pointing it at anyone! What I need is guidance on the basics of clay/shotgun shooting such as stance, gun mounting cartridge selection etc. to get me started so I can avoid getting into bad habits. Any help appreciated. Cheers Flashy

Thunderbird
I read 'Breaking Clays' by Chris Batha and it was quite informative. If you can afford it definitely have some lessons, even one lesson (£50-60) will stop some bad habits before they start. DO NOT just go out and buy a gun unless you KNOW it will fit, or can be made to fit, Remember PW is a great resource - best to keep questions specific and make sure the topic hasn't been 'done to death' elsewhere, otherwise people will waste their time telling you you're wasting their time...kinda.. Like the name by the way, have read all the books - great un-PC stuff!!
JonD
The BASC book of the Sporting Shotgun is pretty good, covers gun handling, safety, types of gun, cartridges etc. Well worth the money, I found it very useful when I started out. Diceman
Batha's "Breaking Clays" is pretty good, as is Bidwell's "Move Mount Shoot", but don't go mad and buy loads of different books - they all have a different style and you will only get confused. I wish I had spent the money I paid out for books on more cartridges. There is no substitute for practice. Find yourself a friendly local strawbaler and buy a few rounds of teas. If you can stand a bit of ribbing people will generally fall over themselves to help when you are just starting out - I know of no other sport where, in general, newcomers are made so welcome. You have to learn to filter out some of it as everyone has their own funny little ways, but you will soon learn the basics. Do have some proper lessons as soon as you can afford it though, it is money well spent.
