ladyshot
Hi all, As I'm new to Clay shooting and I need some advise, I shoot a 20g Beretta 686 and wondered what the best cartridge is for me, I've not a lot of money so I need a good value cartridge. As I'm also a relatively small lady at 5'2" i don't want one that's going to knock me off my feet, any suggestions?
sitsinhedges
If recoil is a real issue I would buy some Hull subsonic 24gram 7 1/2s but I would prefer 24gram Eley CT's as the best value standard 20g cartridge. I am a fan of Gamebore Traditional Game in a 7 for clays as a mild fibrewad cartridge but they are more expensive. I bought a 20g 686 last year and know that at 6lb they can be a bit snappy. Lovely gun but mine just didn't fit right so I sold it and replaced it with a Beretta 391 auto in the same gauge. Any recoil issues are redundant with that maybe you should try one Edited April 7, 2011 by sitsinhedges
dougall
When in your gunshop ask what light loads they have for a 20 gauge.Ideally 21gram-24gram.The 'usual load' is 28 gram, but 21-24g are very effective in a 20 gauge and noticeably lighter for recoil. My sons use Gamebore Super competition 24g for clays..but any of the usual top makes will be fine just keep the load under 28g. Have you had lessons?Equally important is that the gun is comfortably mounted in thr right part of your shoulder..as you will only get knocked about if the gun mount is wrong.Properly seated in your shoulder, loads of 21-24g and you will have no problems at all. Guest cookoff013
if recoil is an issue, use subs.
Cranfield
I use Gamebore 21 gram Competition cartridges (fibre wad 7.5 shot) in my 20 bore and the recoil is minimal.
seeker
When a had a light 686 20 bore I was given a box of 28g cartridges and found them just plain painful. Look at the 21g or 24 g loads mentionned. I found the Hull Pro 20 in 24g 8s to be a comfortable and effective load. FWIW nowadays I seldom use more than 24g in my 12 and often choose the 21g again in 8s where possible. I see Eley list 20 bore 21 & 24 g loads in 7 8s .. lately I've been using their 21 &24 loads in a 28 bore .. both are very pleasant loads that pattern well. COACH
Hull Protwenty 21 grams are fantastic with no recoil. They are very fast. I use them a lot for tuition if people have a 20gauge. But strictly a maximum of 24grams.
