Stripping a sirocco moderator

Being on leave decided that my 17 hmr was in need of some TLC started off by recovering the rifle with green sniper tape to protect the wood.

Whilst moving the gun around I heard something rattling inside the gun is a CZ BRNO 452 on inspection it appeared that the rattling piece is square and should be held in place with a grub screw so that will have to go to a nearby gunsmith.

After watching on you tube how to strip the moderator I decided to attempt it.

I unscrewed the end piece on the moderator to expose the end and thread, on the video it said you unscrew it as its part of the baffles but mine is very tight and i dont want to damage the threads.

My question to all in the know is how do I strip it down.

Thanks Shane

Unscrew the coned end from the body, the baffles will slide out, but there will be a lot of powder residue making it tight so you might have to soak it in diet coke or something. The threaded insert at the other end from the rifle barrel thread is designed to compress the baffles and stop them rattling about, if you don't move it ( because it's seized on yours ) you should be able to reassemble it without rattles.

When i unscrewed it from the gun there was a lot of carbon near the threads it has fired less than 500 rounds are they dirty little guns and how often would you recommend cleaning the moderator.

I went shooting with cz550kevlar the other week and his hmr was a lot quieter than mine.

Will regular cleaning of the moderator make it less loud,

They are dirty guns, I get a light grey residue and lumps of burned powder in mine. I haven't noticed cleaning making any difference to noise, but I do it regularly because I know that all the crud is going to make it impossible to strip if I don't keep on top of it.

Re: noise. What barrel lengths do you and cz550kevlar have ? Do you know what moderator he has ?

I managed to screw mine on to the gun a little to tight by holding the body of the moderator,

when I took the mod off the gun the cone end had got that tight in the mod I had a nightmare to get it apart, so now I only do it up holding the cone itself. maybe a useless bit of info but I lernt the hard way

my cone is really tight and it wont move from the body of the mod the rifle has to go to the gunsmith as a piece has come adrift from the inside so the gunsmith may have to attempt to strip the mod if not i will have to replace it but fingers crossed it will come apart

I had a feeling you had a shorter barrel. Did you know that the Sirocco is available as a different model for shorter barrels ? I think it's called the SM111, it has some stainless baffles to prevent gas cutting. Perhaps you already have that version, if not I'll bear you in mind when I finally clear all the junk off my lathe as I'm intending to make a stainless front baffle for mine even though I have the silhouette length barrel.

It's interesting to have an "ear witness" that the longer HMR is quieter with the same moderator, it's what I would expect but you never know unless someone has actually heard them side-by-side.

its after andrew said it was loud then the other night i went shooting on a golf course and i took a shot and i thought to myself that he was right it just echoed down through the bottom of the golf course i have on occasions used it there all through the night but its getting to the point where i am contemplating switching to the 22lr.

Do please bear us in mind once you have a clear out

The best thing to do with them is throw them in the bin and get an easily stripable one like a dm80....so easy to look after, i went through 3 scirroco's before giving in and buying a decent one.....even if you decide on a different make....make sure its easily strippable!! The hmr is a filthy round!! :good:

The early Siroccos were useless on HMR/WMR because of the "plastic" baffles, they seized together and the internals became a solid mass, if this is the case with yours it is scrap!

Mine was destroyed and Edgar Bros kindly sent me a SIROCCO-SM1116 replacement.

The Sirocco was an experiment for me and I remain unimpressed, all my other rimfires, including my WMR, now have SAK, and the odds are when this Sirocco dies there will be another SAK.

I get the impression that the sirocco mod isnt that good.

Can i buy another mod as a replacement without having to make any changes to my certificate reason for asking is I have had plenty of shotguns over the years but when it comes to FAC I buy them and they stay on my certificate without change.

All advice greatfully received

Only me..

I have my 452 style cut down to 16 inches, to strip my sirocco mod i unscrewed the top end, plugged up the threaded end and sprayed loads and i mean loads of brake cleaner in which melted the carbon deposits and all manner of other crud then everything came out fine.

And yes to replace your mod you will have to sell it or dispose of it etc send the ticket away to clear it then buy a new one which is a pain, i`m seriously thinking of changing my sirocco to a DM-80 when i wear mine out but so far it is working fine, but not sure how much life is left.
