njc110381
Whilst on the quest for a reasonable .223 rifle I've just had a read about the Steyr AUG. Generally I don't like guns that look like it, but it's so short and compact it would make a stunning truck gun. So as before when I was asking about the A-Bolt.... How do they shoot? What's the trigger like? Any bad points? Again, thanks for any replies. I'll probably stick with the A-Bolt but the AUG looks very interesting. njc110381
Actually. I've dropped the idea already. A review described it as having "a mushy 10-12lb trigger pull". NO THANKS! Edited April 19, 2011 by njc110381
Beardo
i like the idea as a truck shooting rifle - until i tried one, they're terrible - the trigger is the worst i've ever pulled. Have a look at a Steyr Scout if you want a compact take the knocks design - there's a really cheap one on guntrader at mo, though it sounds like the barrels are pitted. CZ550Kevlar
They shoot like an assault rifle, not made for accuracy or for punching paper & even vermin/fox shooting is a waste of time, the trigger pull is heavy and ugly as with all bull-pup designs, also the straight pull will really annoy you, it is heavy and noisy when ejecting cases and also when chambering the next round as you can`t do it slowly you need to let the bolt go under it`s under force which means everytime you want to shoot everything for miles around will have run off after hearing you clunking away. njc110381
That's the conclusion I came to. I just spotted one and posted up on here asking about it. Ten minutes of Googling later and I'm certain I don't want one!
phaedra1106
But they are great fun to shoot in full auto Shot one in Florida and it was quite accurate (for a full auto), MP5 was by far the best one I tried
Dirty Harry
I used them at work Neil. They were good but I wouldent want one for my own use.
Imperfection
I've used one and despite being a fantastic looking rifle-in straight pull its appalling.Perhaps if we were trusted with self loading again it might be a useable rifle, but the straight pull action is clunky, heavy and not much good if you want an accurate quick follow up shot. Shame the ones we have here are so flawed because i still think its probably the best looking rifle ever.
Dr_Scholl
Steyr AUGs have a terrible trigger pull, like most other bull pup designs. But they're fun to shoot, so depending on what you're using it for i'd say get it. I'm more of an AR-15 fan, personally.
NorfolkPoacher
I've got an sgc ar15 with a 16" barrel. It's great in the truck very accurate and perfect for 300 yard foxing. I was told by sgc even with a 16" barrel it's good to 600 yards! For such a small gun it's superb and will take 55 to 80grain bullets. They do cost more than an aug but really worth it and you can swap so many bits over very easily, stocks, barrels, guards, rails. Mine has a Jewell trigger and shoots superb. The only real choice for a staight pull "black rifle" oh and yes the cocking does make a bit of a clunk! Atvb Dave
njc110381
See I'm in the opposite camp to most of you. I can't think of a worse looking gun to carry around a field where I may be seen by the public. It's plastic, wanna be Rambo appearance really doesn't do it for me. The thing I like about them is their compact design, which if it shot well would out weigh the negatives as I see them. I have a mate with an AR and although it's amazing on the range I wouldn't want one. It doesn't have anything to offer the pest controller apart from maybe a hi-cap magazine. It's still a long gun. I'm going to stick with an A-Bolt unless a suitable used CZ527 appears on Guntrader for a sensible price before my variation comes back.
