wildfowler.250
Hi, I was just wanting to ask a quick question. If a bitch is gun shy, are her puppies likely to be prone to it? or is it just because the mother has been poorly trained? I'm guessing it's not genetic? Really appreciate your replies! jmooney
It's totally a training issue, shouldn't have any bearing on the pups.
mudpatten
I`d be a bit concerned, possibly wrongly, about an inherited genetic predisposition towards nervousness or being highly strung. Personally, and without any scientific backing whatsoever, I would not breed from a gun shy bitch, nor would I buy one of her puppies. You are going to have to live with the fruits of your decision for about 12 years, maybe longer. I`d be looking to shorten the odds of picking a wrong `un by any means possible. Pups from a gun shy bitch would simply not be on my list.

wildfowler.250
Thanks for the replies. The chap,(as far a's I'm aware) isn't heavy into his shooting so I'm guessing the dog could be trained incorrectly. From what I've heard the bitch is quite timid. Dog is a very good one,(Field trial champ I believe). Buuuut I would not be keeping the dog if it turned out not up to scratch! Thanks for the replies,(not very comforting ). wildfowler.250
Meant to add that the bitch's mother is from a decent trainer as well

monkeyboots
i know a lad who had a springer that was gun shy and i mean it would nearly take a fit even at the sight of a gun and he bred about 4 litters from her in total and every pup that went to shooting homes all where 100% ok with the gun,

I start mine from day one banging aroung the run dropping the stainless food bowl etc whilst softly talking to the pup and playing games etc not had a problem so far
wildfowler.250
Cheers for the replies. I will have to look at the dog/bitch and im going to ring the guy that had the bitches mother,(he has a fair few dogs). Im very undecided as to which way to go with this. I've got a feeling that introducing the dog to bangs slowly should be fine but I don't really want a timid dog anyway, gunshy or not... ATB!
