Evening from a Lincs newbie

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, thought I should introduce myself. I have a small permission to hunt pigeons and occasional rabbits in Lincolnshire. I'm a relatively new shooter and I currently have a Weihrauch HW77 air rifle.

I've been reading dozens of topics recently to get advice on decoying (to air rifle) and also home made decoys (I will start on this route I think as I'm slightly potless at the moment with my first child incoming, unless some second hand ones come up for sale) and thought it'd be rude not to check in.

So, hello! I'll get back to looking at the Craft section for DIY Decoys and hope to acquire some knowledge from the more experienced shooters and hopefully to join in myself.

Thanks,

Jamie.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone :)

Hello Jamie,

Welcome to pigeon watch.

Where abouts in Lincolnshire are you based?

Good luck with the Baby!.

Regards

Pippin Pup

I'm in Grantham, so probably 25miles from you in Lincoln; though my permission is about 10 miles south of here down the A1 - two farm yards, with mostly ferals to be dealt with for the farm manager but there is a small clump of trees between two fields (rape) and about 30 yards from some barns right below a flight-line - each time I go to bash the ferals I've been keeping an eye out for woodies and think if I set up out of sight with a few decoys it might be a good place to clobber a few.

I've never eaten pigeon before, that part is new to me (mostly because I've been bagging ferals as I mention), though I have the breasts of the last woodie I shot currently in the fridge, I'm deliberating how to prepare it at the moment.

I did learn one thing though - my knife isn't as sharp as I thought it was!

hi and welcome i like the bit about your knife

I didn't! It did the job (nearly new Opinel No 8) but the first time I'd used it on something I'd shot and it wasn't as sharp as I'd like. Will have to give it a quick fettling before the next one is prepared for the pot.

Marinade in sweet chilli sauce overnight, then slap on the barbie.

Serve with fresh homemade coleslaw, lettuce tomato & spring onions and a glass of sider.

Yum

That does sound pretty bloody good!

They're in the fridge just in a sandwich bag, but I'm considering a barbie tonight (if the wind dies down...) when the better half is home - reckon I can forego the marinade? Or get away with 2 hours-ish?

  • 2 weeks later...

The bbq was called off due to bad weather (v. windy), but the pigeon breasts were lovely - more practice cooking them needed though, think I gave them too long on each side.

Hoping to have some more shortly though, I'm building up some modest decoying kit through freebies and second hand bits - so hopefully a few more woodies will be coming my way soon.
