markyboy
over the last few weeks ive been shooting over rape, with mixed results. 40 and 50,s being the best days. but could have been more. but with the wind we have had ive struggled on the bad days to wonder if my set up or pattern is being effective. i use a magnet, decoys, and bouncers. if you have a right to left wind whats an ideal pattern? if you have a left to right wind whats an ideal pattern? if you have a wind blowing into your face whats an ideal pattern? if you have a wind blowing from behind you whats an ideal pattern? sorry for amature questions but im looking to try acheive correct patterns so after a bad day i cant blame my decoy pattern as at the minute im just going with what i feel will work without any experiance added to my days shooting!!! mark
retromlc
with 40-50 bags on adv i'd say you're doing something right, look how many I've shot this year on my signature.not every bird will decoy, somedays are better than others but with your bags I'd be happy. deny essex
Sounds like you have the pattern right already as said, very respectable bags, if the birds are decoying into the pattern its right, if they look and shy away then its wrong, there are basic 'U' and 'V'to start with. But its more a watching the birds reaction to your pattern and adjusting as you think fit, as always different days different ways.
proTOM1
40sand 50s is good going What you have to remember is not everyday you out the birds will just chuck them selfs in to your set up ,in this game its trail and error when it come to decoy patters ,what works 1 day may not work the next . Patterns i tend to go for tho are . Left to right wind L pattern long leg in front of the hide ,same right to left but other way around . Wind behind either u pattern or 2 groups . Wind in my face again 2 groups or random sometimes a v facing away and well out . But like ive said trail and error .

markyboy
Thanks guys, yes I got a couple of good days when conditions were good! But last few times I've been out with strong winds and they were changing each time I went out and birds just didn't seem all that interested and wondererd if my pattern was set up correctly. So where do I position my magnet for the wind conditions? Cheers

Cheers Again its trail and error but i tend to have mine in front of the decoys eg if you have a wind behind you and a u pattern about 15 to 20 yards out in front i will put the rotary to 1 side or the other about 5 or so yards infront of the decoys ,with a L shape infront about the same distance in the middle or to 1 side again
chrispti
Also shooting them too often and setting up in the same place wont help. The birds will get wary
Cranfield
Often when its really windy (as it has been lately), its more a question of field choice/hide placement than pattern of decoys. Try to find the most sheltered part of the field, where the birds can land with the minimum of wind buffeting. In the air and on the ground they like to be as comfortable as possible.
