al4x
Yes, my thoughts entirely............until I tried some Gamebore 32g Steel 5's over decoyed pigeons through the 1/4 choke in my Benelli Supersport a few months back, I was killing some long birds, I can honestly say I noticed no difference to using Lead. Cat must say I had some express 4's and 5's to use up after buying a slab for ducks and used them on a couple of game days to good effect. triscrx
Sadly I think cartridge prices are like fuel prices as long as people keep paying it them it gives them ground to continue raising the price. If people are willing to pay a certain price it sets a new price level across the country. Just like the oil greed it spreads. If everyone starting buying a certain cartridge the other suppliers would be forced to reduce the prices to attract customers but that is never going to happen. End of the day they know they have us cornered. Sad situation though when 1000 Cartridges are £200+ now. I remember when they were about £

I remember when they were about £80 whilst googling for prices yesterday I found a price list for cash n carry, got all excited when I saw clay carts for "£89 per 1000" I was thinking get in!! I'll have 5000 at that price! Until I noticed the list was dated 2008...doh! D

Guest cookoff013
there is nout wrong with steel shells. have developed a fast light steel shell for woodies. when using steel selecting the appropriate shell is ever more critical. skeet, 24g or 7/8oz loads of steel 9 are ideal, some shooters love them, at 122/k is ideal for the skeet addict. these shells are not great for english sporting. english sporting steel 7s are a must and 1oz maximum load. they do recoil abit. they are great for most sporting applications. i like these shells for general clay shooting. the 1oz no.9 are very punchy for sheet.. Cat I don't doubt a 32g 4 or 5 will bring down a pigeon at a fair range. The problem comes when people start trying to push the boundaries and save a few quid by using steel clay carts. Just looking on the Essex Gun website and the Gamebore steel 4's and 5's are £182.50/1000, only £6 cheaper than their Clear Pigeon 32g 6's in lead, so not much of a saving really. Personally I won't use steel unless I have to, as my own experience is they just don't kill as well as lead.
Guest cookoff013
the problem is the cip. we make fast cartridges in this country, but they are sold abroad in mainly america. the cip have a speed limit on steel shells, 1400fps, subtract 100from that for the 2.5ft from the barrel muzzel. most manufacturers dont even want to get close to the maximum speed. so they make limp ammo. i`ve seen some at subsonic, and under 950fps. that is very slow.
