Ok i may be corrected but im pretty sure im correct. Jackdoors are the smallest and their heads are a darker shade of black than the rest of their body. Next size up are crows there jet black including beak then Rooks are the biggest they are black except their beak which is grey hope this helps. Also all the above make a diffrent sound which you will also be able to use to identify them. Good luck

These links should help, may have to copy and paste into browser...

May I suggest that you try observing these birds before shooting to ensure you don't shoot something you shouldnt! Obviously the rules of the general licence apply to these species too.

Carrions and magpies ( know what they look like  ) need shooting as for rooks some say they do alot of good eating leather jackets in pasture but they will eat seed crops and most farmers like the numbers kept down. Jackdaws do hang about with the rest of the gang on freshly sow crops so must do some damage. Personally I shoot all carrions and magpies, rooks if they are in high numbers and don't bother with jackdaws. Rook pie apparently is quite nice but not sure if I will be taking any birds home for the wife to jam in the toaster

Ps As with pigeons I think your meant to only shoot them if they are doing crop damage and in relation to pest control as they do have rights.

Yer, if I get any I will try them, I'll try anything once. :) as for pests ? Hmm... They must eat seed and other things so surely they do damage, either way if I like them to eat. I'm having them haha I don't no how you guys shoot squirrels, I swear they are out of the matrix and can dodge pellets I had 3 attempts at one and it was like on the mask where he dodges bullets.

Young Rooks (branchers) can be eaten and apparently the "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie" were actually Rooks. Never tried it myself but Squirrel is delicious. As said above they are hard work to prep so Mrs Colster puts the whole skinned and gutted Squirrel in a pot with stock veg, simmer for about an hour, remove squirrel and let it cool a bit then peel off all the meat (it will come away very easily now), pop it back in with the veg and you have a fantastic Squirrel soup.
