pigeons on peas

1 of my farmers rang last friday to say there was a lot of pigeons on his peas so me and a pal went for a look - there was about 3oo. He told us not to walk in the peas or put dog in & we were there for about 3 hours. Shot about 6o but most dropped in the peas - picked 15 up what fell in the corner of the barley where we had put the decoys - about 35 yards square where the rabbits had hammered it as you can see in the pictures. Had the hide on side of the peas under a privet bush on a flight line

Strange. I've never had a farmer tell me not to walk in or send my dog into a pea field. That's such a waste of good meat. Also, how do you know there wasn't loads of wounded birds amongst the peas?

And how did you set out decoys if you couldn't walk amongst the crop?

the peas are not in rows and are about 2ft high and are all entwined. i did go in for 2 birds and made a mess, but needed 2 for the floaters. The picture where you can see the hide is the pea field - the birds we shot over the peas were only about 20yards away so won't have been many wounded birds - using no 6s. You're right about waste of good meat but if i dont shoot them someone else will. We had the decoys in the barley field - fuds

you aren't shooting them for meat but crop protection, this can be quite common at this time of year. Peas you can't walk through without flattening a load when they are at this stage so leaving them is best, dead pigeons do't eat peas!

I understand that, but generally, if i know i won't be able to pick the birds, i won't shoot them.

so your farmers have to put up with loosing their crops or calling in another shooter?

thank you again you get it across better than me.the field is just off the road people will see the birds. ask the farmer. permission gone thats wye i shoot.em when told to.

Shoot them on the flight lines rather than on the crop.

You are just a mobile bird scarer for the farmer and have little impact on the numbers of birds. Your shooting moves them off his field.

The farmer isn't naive to think you reduce pigeon numbers just move them off his field.

As for losing shooting I doubt it, the farmer would be happier you walking round the fields letting off randon shots to keep the birds moving than sitting in one corner of the field.

you dont know my land we are on the flight line. there is a big hedge behind us that field is not mine . the flight is up and down the hedge over the gate.then across the field over the hedge where the two gates meet. if you know anything about pigeon shooting.pigeons always go for the best gaps. so thay dont get attacked by hawks.as for been a bird scarer we got about 60 birds so some good shooting.and the farmer is a mate.our eyes will be in when the real shooting starts. then see who gets the big bags.bird scarer ha ha ha

i. av about 40. 000 acres of all good crops. 140 a week is your average not very good at all, could that in 1 week. You try to tell me about my numbers wont make a difference. my farmers are very very happy with me. thats why i got all the land i have crop protection.

I'm sure most on this forum would be happy to shoot over 500 pigeons in a month.

I didn't say your numbers wouldn't make a difference.

I'm glad your farmers are happy with you and good luck to you.
