les gedge
1 of my farmers rang last friday to say there was a lot of pigeons on his peas so me and a pal went for a look - there was about 3oo. He told us not to walk in the peas or put dog in & we were there for about 3 hours. Shot about 6o but most dropped in the peas - picked 15 up what fell in the corner of the barley where we had put the decoys - about 35 yards square where the rabbits had hammered it as you can see in the pictures. Had the hide on side of the peas under a privet bush on a flight line

Also, how do you know there wasn't loads of wounded birds amongst the peas? And how did you set out decoys if you couldn't walk amongst the crop? And how did you set out decoys if you couldn't walk amongst the crop? the peas are not in rows and are about 2ft high and are all entwined. i did go in for 2 birds and made a mess, but needed 2 for the floaters. The picture where you can see the hide is the pea field - the birds we shot over the peas were only about 20yards away so won't have been many wounded birds - using no 6s. You're right about waste of good meat but if i dont shoot them someone else will. We had the decoys in the barley field - fuds

Peas you can't walk through without flattening a load when they are at this stage so leaving them is best, dead pigeons do't eat peas! Richie10
Shoot them on the flight lines rather than on the crop. You are just a mobile bird scarer for the farmer and have little impact on the numbers of birds. Your shooting moves them off his field. The farmer isn't naive to think you reduce pigeon numbers just move them off his field. As for losing shooting I doubt it, the farmer would be happier you walking round the fields letting off randon shots to keep the birds moving than sitting in one corner of the field. Brad93
Dunno what the farmer thinks the fox is gonna do if ou can't out a dog in to get the birds fox will make just as much mess as a dog surely

I'm sure most on this forum would be happy to shoot over 500 pigeons in a month. I didn't say your numbers wouldn't make a difference. I'm glad your farmers are happy with you and good luck to you.
