stokie
First check for play at the wheels. Rock from side to side could be ball joints. Rock from top to bottom could be swivel pin. Then check steering shaft if play detected will be both UJs . Check steering box if play there can be slightly adjusted by nut on top . It's normally an accilation of all the above .. Ticking in the bay . Sounds more like an alternator fault. Could be electricity tracking down to earth . Check it at night whilst looking for sparks . If you need it wet . Chuck a bucket of water over it ,it won't hurt . Cooling flush out the rad and heater then check the viscous coupling on the cooling fan if it spins with no resistance then this is possibly gooses . Welcome to the world of landrovers . Hope this helps kev

Paul223
steering play could very well be the tramp bar bushes, it's the bar that comes across the front of the axle, is fixed at one end to a bracket on the axle and at the other to a bracket by the steering box, it's job is to hold the axle against the box as it pulls and pushes, a small amount of play in these bushes equates to a lot on the wheel
