:good: :good: Totally agree, I gave up smoking just over 4 years ago after over 20 years happily puffing away, but that was my choice. That is exactly what it should be, if people want to give up they will in time, it is time they stopped dictating. Its just another witch hunt by the Government, blaming the cost of treatment on everything they can think of, such as being overweight, drinking too much etc. We don't see the Govenment trying to prevent sports with the potential to cause harm which cost the NHS vast amounts to treat in A&E every year, perhaps that will be next!! Maybe compulsory insurance to cover costs, and then possibly charges for injuries caused by accidents!! Who knows what is next from this bunch of fools

Sports in general keep you fit. The number of people that use the NHS because of sports injuries is a relatively small percentage.

Smoking in general kills you. The number of poeople that use the NHS because of smoking is relatively high

Just stop smoking. You'll feel better for it :D

A third of the Government income is from the taxing of addictive substances so smokers pay over the odds for any health care they will need over their shortened lifetimes . To discourage people from smoking it is not the best idea to treat them like lepers either , it just gets peoples ' backs up . I hate to see workers cowering outside having a smoke , if it is disallowed then there should be at least a decent sheltered place with some dignity . I quit nearly 20 years back and would encourage anyone to follow suit but those who cannot stop should not be treated like 2nd class citizens . Good luck to all attempts at quitting :good:

The government would never ban smoking because it is a huge positive externality. You can by cigs for a pound a pack in thailand and shops are still making a profit so why are they £7 over here? because there is a shed load of tax that more than pays for the cost to the nhs.

If you banned alcohol wouldn't that have a far better impact on NHS resources?Just think of all those A&E departments flooded with tanked up empty heads each weekend,no deaths and injuries caused by drink driving;no treatment of people with drink related illnesses.Don't worry,it aint gonna happen.

I know of no smokers who after 10 cigarettes decide to shove a glass in someones face, but know of a couple who have done the same after 10 pints of lager!

Smoking is now generally frowned upon, and a minority 'pastime',therefore it is an easy target.Governments of any denomination appear to be encroaching on our freedom of choice. But you can guarantee any ban will have no effect on those who govern us,just as the smoking in bars ban does not apply to the bars in parliament. :good:
