partimehero
Hi, I have held my SECTION.2 shotgun license for approx 6 months and have now saved enough to buy my first gun. There are so many good guns around and I just dont know which one to go for. I have narrowed my preferences down and id like a 12g, black synthetic stock with a drop down pistol grip if possible. Also, I am a carpenter and fancy a go at some stock making / renovation. For this, I was thinking of a simple 12g bolt action.... Baikal maybe? Can anybody suggest ideas on both of the above please? Many thanks
ste12b
Try as many as you can. The fit is the biggest issue. I like my escort, but many don't.
HDAV
First thing is what will you be shooting? Clays? Game? Pigeon? Synthetic stocks aren't that common and will limit choice. I suggets you go have a few lessons on some clays learn a bit about gun fit, then go shopping. 12g is probably the way to go but Bolt action shotguns in 12G are rare and unusaul probably better sticking to O/U's or perhaps a SxS
partimehero
Thanks guys, info much appreciated. I'm shooting clays but would like to progress to live game eventually. I used to shoot airguns and had a nightmare with the woodwork (keeping it clean and clear from scuffs and dents etc). To be honest, Im a little heavy handed hence my preference to synthetic. I was looking at mossberg and remington models but not sure if they are section 2. But Im still open to ideas and suggestions. With regards to the bolt action model, it will be more of a casual thing as I would remove it from the stock, make my own and just use it as and when. many thanks again
HDAV
I would definitely go for lessons on clays and look for something that fits in an O/U config, if you want to make a stock for the challenge make one for your O/u. As for marking the stock synth can mark too and won't refinish as easily as wood it's the fake wood laminates that are really bad topcoat etc, get yourself something with a decent oil finished walnut and you can take the marks out easily
apache
id like a 12g, black synthetic stock with a drop down pistol grip if possible. I am a carpenter Get a wood stock - what sort of carpenter are you! Plenty of bolt action .410G and single shot break action 12G about that you can pick up for £50 and make your own stock (or refinish an existing one) Edited July 17, 2011 by apache

mattslaptop247
Top ip Dont spend too much, as after a couple of weeks you'll want to buy another one, then another, then another..... and if the wife asks how much they were tell her somthing rediculously cheep! And when she says that you can only shoot one gun at a time, tell her that she can only wear one pair o shoes at a time!!!!
Frenchieboy
If you are going to shoot clays then I would say avoid a bolt action shotgun at all costs, it is very unlikely that you will be able to recycle the gun in time to get a second shot off if the clays are being put out in pairs. I would go for an Over and Under or a Side by Side. As has been said it might be advisable to go for a few lessons first to se which you get on better with and to learn a little about gun fitting mate! ChrisAsh
As said before all clay shooting will involve shooting pairs where you have two clays in the air at the same time, people use to shoot clays with side by side but now-days 99% use over under guns. 12 gauge is also by far the cheapest cartridges half the price of say 410 or 28 gauge

If possible get the coach to check the fit before you part with your money. New or second hand. Its swings and roundabouts. With a new gun you will get some sort of guarantee be it 12 mths or whet! When I bought my Beretta I found it came with 10 years guarantee. Now that was something I had not anticipated. When you have got the hang of it, practise, practise, practise.
