rallyrus
Hi all, A week or two ago I treated myself to a night vision monocule, a Yukon Ranger. Not really had chance to try it out yet with working and being away so last night I thought i'd give it a try, I've had a quick go before to see what it was like but not for shooting. After previously staying out til around 1.30am and charlie not coming I thought I'd wait til 3 and go then, just before dark I went with the air rifle and shot a bunny as bait. Around 10ish I took the rabbit down to the spot where I was planning on shooting and put the lamp down there ready too (in the back of the L200 parked up ready in the field, my hinding place) I pegged the rabbit down using a welding rod bent into a U shape and pushed into the ground pinning the rabbit down. Back in the house and alarm set for 2.40am. Up I got, got my gear together, shotgun, night vision & air rifle. Air rifle for a spot of magpie shooting at first light when they come to the rabbit. That was then plan anyway. I then proceeded to the field, stopping just before the gate and having a look with the night vision, the fox had beaten me to it! there it was pulling away at the rabbit! I just stood there watching thinking wish I had a rifle..... I don't know how long it had been there pulling away but it soon had the rabbit up and made off with it in its mouth, I watched it come all the way up the field and through the fence, totally oblivious to me watching it, I think! The night vision is a great bit of kit, really pleased with it. Do I go out again tonight but at 1.30am and wait, or try the alarm clock method for a few night's and get a good idea what time its visiting? camokid
how far can you spot a fox with it.?
rallyrus
how far can you spot a fox with it.? The rabbit from the gate is approx 100-120yds away at a guess, could see that okish. Any further and it might be difficult to identify although eye shine can be seen to probably 200yds. It could be better than that I need to have a play with it see if I can improve focus at that range

steve_b_wales
NV monocular's always work better with added IR. Get yourself a lamp with IR filter, and you can double the viewing range.
Frenchieboy
It sounds like an ideal situation to set up a "bait station" and then try the alarm clock method to me mate! Let us know how you get on. Good luck!

happypig
Or even a simple red filter on the lens will work wonders. It does not have to be some super bright spotlight..... anything will add to the useful range of the NV
maxwell
Hi Fella, as Steve mentioned added IR such as a Dipol L3 will improve things significantly Good luck with the fox Regards Maxwell
rallyrus
Well last night I thought I would get another rabbit as bait and sit out in wait for charlie, one last try before baiting for a few days while i'm working. After dark around 10.30ish we headed off out for a mooch, me and my daughter. First field we come to and had a shine in, couldn't believe my eye's :o a young fox! Rubbish pic, forgot the flash! and another pic this morning we carried on to the other fields for a rabbit but didn't have any luck, I think partly because my daughter sounds like a elephant trying to sneak around Not a bad night tho
camokid
put the work in and you get results told you it would not hurt. fair play
steve_b_wales
It's got a build in IR lamp I know it has, but extra IR 'light' by means of a lamp/IR filter set up, can sometimes double the viewing range.
