Cranfield
I am thinking of replacing my old PC Monitor, its a Hansol 16" (15.8" actually) and I think the picture quality is OK. Its replacement would be a 17" flat screen Monitor. The reasons for replacing it are , improved desk space and eliminating window/light reflection. In my "Office" I have a side window that shows on the left hand side of the screen and at night , I have a ceiling light that can become irritating. I am not a game player and don't want to spend a fortune. Any recommendations on flat screen Monitors ? What are the Dell ones like (they have a 40% sale at the moment) ? Should I get a flat screen Monitor ? Any comments gratefully appreciated.
rb5037
I'm looking at a "Samsung SyncMaster 710 mp". It's square not wide screen and only 17" but I'm sure they do a bigger one if you want. This also has a TV tuner so you can watch TV with and Ariel. Had it for about a year now and can't fault it. Not sure what's about at the mo, but this one I'm happy with, don't think it was too expensive either

ChrisNicholls
I have had no problems so far on my Dell laptop, found them a good company to deal with. Cheap Dell stuff also available here. http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/default.asp
il cacciatore
Yeh get a flat screen monitor because the old tube types are very bad for your eyes. They emit somesort of radiation. I think UV.
Dunkield
I have used flat panels on all my pc's for years, BUT be warned the cheap ones are utter **** My dad got the cheapest one he could from PC World and it is dire. Check the reslotion they will supports Cranners (TFT's run 'native resolution' so you can't alter it) Contrast ratio's and pixel pitch vary a lot as well. Have a bit of browse round before parting with your reddies and try the one you intend to buy first - if you can. Most larger manufacturers will make 3 or 4 models in the same size, so there is your indication that quality and therefore price will vary. The panels themselves are made by only a few companies, they are then badge engineered and marketed. Edit I would also add they don't last forever, the decent ones will allow you to access the power on hour timer through the setup (OSD) menu, to tell you how long it has been on - 3 years constant use is about the max, so use the screen saver and don't leave it on when you aren't using it. And as I typing this this on my notebook in my back garden in glorious sunshine, I can confirm they don't go very bright either, I have HAD to put the sunshade up, which I an not very happy about I can tell you Edited May 11, 2006 by stuartp

Cranfield
As I intend to purchase this from the Internet, I will not be able to try it out, unless I can find one on display somewhere. Thats why I am trying to benefit from someone else's experience. What resolution should I be looking for ? Is there a recommended "contrast ratio" and "pixel pitch" as well ? MC
Cranfield, Have a look at www.misco.co.uk The one I have at work which is used primarily for CAD work is A iiyama pro lite. It is 17" and is 75hz refresh rate, I wouldn't swap it for the world. The contrast is sharp and there is no glare from it at all Hope this helps Cheers Martin
Dunkield
If you are talking 17" avoid anything 1024x768, the good ones now are 1280x1024. Pixel pitch should be 0.264 A good contrast ratio would be 500:1, 1000:1 is better still What you need to keep in mind it that this technology is <relatively> new so they are playing catch up with CRT techonolgy, so good TFT's can match CRT pictue quality, but bad ones fall woefully short. As Martin said Misco do some great deals, and keep an eye on Scan for their 'today only' specials.
Dead-Eyed Duck
I've got a 19" Dell flatscreen. Superb bit of kit. Don
Cranfield
Thanks for the added spec info. At the moment Dell is the likely option. They have some good specs at some very fair prices.
