Hunter
Im comming up to buying a .222 rifles for foxing/long range rabbits, and am wondering if anyone knows any tactical type .222 rifles? there are plenty in .223, but I havent found much in .222. Im looking for something that can take all kinds of weather, and is suitable for long range hunting/target shooting. I also like the fact synthectic matiriels can stay out over night in rain snow etc and not become warped or damaged. If anyone knows anything roughly to fit the description I would apreciate it. I have looked at the T3 range of synthetic stocks made by Tikka, but found them not feeling comfortable at all Thanks

mry716
Do remember stainless is what is says - stainless - rather than rust proof. Stainless rifles are less prone to being affected by conditions but still need a lot of TLC to ensure they always give of their best. And I must say I have no idea of a rifle that will fit your requirements unless you rebarrel something that was originally 223.

sussex lad
Im comming up to buying a .222 rifles for foxing/long range rabbits, Hunter, Did Sussex give you vermin on your .222??(i.e for the rabbits) Whos your F.E.O ?
Hunter
We have Graham Woods here.. Very friendly chap, gave me the all clear on the guns I chose, and ammunition count etc.. Nice guy! we had a good chat about shooting, he was/is a deer stalker. Just waiting for certificate now!!! The .222 is for foxes mainly. HD, Can the T3 Varmint be supplied pre threaded for a moderator? or will I have to send it off to have the work done, then proofed etc.. I really do like the looks of the Varmint, held one in the local gun shop, and as you say the ambi stock is a little on the lean side, but overall a good weight. Is there a difference between the life span of stainless or non stainless barrels? I would prefer to get one rifle and keep it for a long reliable time, hence a tough synthetic stock for those long damp lamping nights.. Thanks for you help so far all! As said above, it may be possible to put a .222 barrel/action on a .223 stock, but I think this would be a little pricey for what it is.. good idea though
sussex lad
Hunter, I would be very very surprised if you've got a vermin condition on your .222(fox only) when you your ticket arrives!! Sussex just don't do it Ive tried many times and been told the only chance i might have is to own only the one gun ie my .223 then maybe they would consider it Your lucky Graham Woods is one of the good guys If you want tactical bin the .222 and get a .223 then get yourself a AR15
mry716
Rabbits are not vermin they are Ground Game (since the law change during the war years) but no Game licence is required as with Hares. Because of problems that I have encountered in the past I looked at the whole of the legislation relating to the shooting of a wide variety of species and as far as I am concerned I accept the generally held legal opinion that 'Vermin' does not include either Rabbits or Hares along with many more things one may choose to shoot. (eg Head shot Pheasant or Partridge for the pot). Not wishing to fall foul of any law by shooting something my FAC 'might' not allow I have had my FAC amended accordingly so that whatever I choose to shoot I KNOW that I am covered. You should therefore also consider sending a request to the Constabulary that issued his FAC for the word 'Vermin' to be changed to 'Vermin, Pest Control and Sporting Purposes'. By so doing you will be covered for the shooting of Hares and Rabbits and virtually all other species he may have the opportunity to shoot. This will be irrespective of his Constabulary's borders and local interpretation of relevant laws. There is no excuse for the Police not to provide you with the facility you require to shoot the quarry for which you have any particular rifle on your FAC. I have even contacted BASC for help several times after many phone calls and letters from them on my behalf and the response was that Sussex interpret the guide lines how they see fit and that there's nothing that can be done
Hunter
Thanks for the replies everyone, most helpful and interesting. The reason I chose .222 is because 1) its phasing out, I like to have something different, 2) I didnt know it would have been just as easy to have .223.. I thought I would have more chance getting the smallest centerfire first. Pretty lucky to be able to get .22lr, .222 and SGC first time.. Graham also signed me in for club shooting with the .22lr.. very helpful and friendly chap. Anyone in Sussex, ask for him to visit you as he is reasonable and a shooter himself He was more interested in me, not the safe, or reasons for the guns.. he talked to me to find out if I was sensible and not a nuttter. I like that.. (of course I do have genuine reasons for the callibres) but I think the fact he is a shooter himself puts us all in the same boat, and he is not trying to stop hunting/shooting, but just to enforce it.. Top man! Oh, and drinks on me.. I just paid off the Sako Finnfire Varmint today, I have bought my first rifle! now I just need the licence... Frank
I am guessing he meant 'floated' ?? And that is an ASE S5 mod if I am not mistaken Frank - Jackson Rifles do them... Thanks Stuart. I have been told by my rifle smith, small mods are bad news when it comes to anything bigger then a .22 Hornet. Im talking about T4 and the one above, as their is ment to be very high pressure and gas from the likes of .222, .223, .22-250s ect.?? T8s are ment to be safer. I have mentioned this before on here but did not get a good response. I was going to get a T4 put on mine, then was told otherwise and that a T8 is best, but i just dont like the big bulky, over sized heavy apperance of the whole thing.
