steve_b_wales
After our recent success rate on the corvids, Mark (The Poacher) and I decided to try again this morning. We met at 06.30, and was all set up and ready within half an hour. The wind was very strong, partly because the farm is high up and most of the fields are exposed to the elements. We waited about 5 minutes, and a large crow came gliding in to our decoys. Mark had a great shot and it was dead in the air. We used it on a floater. Jackdaw's were attracted to the rota with 2 crows (from a previous shoot) attached to it, but the high winds meant that a lot of them could not land. You could see them battling against the wind. A few did land and paid the price. After shooting about 20 birds, we could see that a lot of crows/jackdaws were landing in a different field, so decided to move to where they were. The field was exposed, and we set the hide against a fence, and within minutes the jackdaws were flying into the decoys. We had some excellent sporting shots, and also missed a few too. By 2pm, we packed up because I had business to attend to. Our total bag was 39 birds, which consisted of 38 Jackdaws and 1 Crow, 2 jackdaws fell into fields some 200+ yards away, but were dead, but we managed to pick up 37. We plan another sortie on Thursday, if the weather holds up, and hopefully we can get another good bag. The photo's show some of the dead Jackdaws, used as decoys, and the end result. My thanks to Mark for his company, and I look forward to our shoot on Thursday.

steve_b_wales
See you use spikes up the vent Steve we only use wire stuck under the chin into the head, do you find the spike better ?? Yes, we use thin bamboo canes.I have cut them long enough to fit into the bird. with another 3-4 inches left, which is inserted into the ground. When used this way, it gives the impression of the birds in an upright position. It has always worked for me, for many years. Steve.

steve_b_wales
the one on the rota centre of pic looks a bit rough good shooting I agree. When the birds were 'twirling' around on the rota, the wind caught their tail/wing feathers and blew them 'back to front'.
