Wildfowling permission?

If the club has not bought the land outright and with it the shooting rights, then it is renting the shooting rights from the landowner, be that whomever. This rental might be for a single season or for extended periods of anything between, usually, 7 and 21 years.

In England and Wales you will need lawful access to get to your bit of ground whether it be on the foreshore or otherwise. That lawful access might be by public footpath, public highway etc. or by some legal access agreement with the appropriate landowner.

Walking across land in England and Wales without authority or permission would be a simple civil trespass if the gun was being carried in a secure slip. Walking across the same land with an unslipped gun under your arm might well constitute armed trespass, if you were stupid enough to do it.

Just in case anybody thought this, there is no such thing in England and Wales as free shooting below the mean high water mark. Technically, there never has been, and the old BASC/Crown Estates agreement which came pretty close to being that, has now been superceded by a system of leases.

The law in Scotland is completely different.

There is a long section on the Humber where the wildfowling club has a shooting lease from the Crown but cannot get access from the seawall onto the foreshore across privately owned ground. A similar situation to that in Scotland's 'right to roam', would be a great benefit in this case.

Who 'owns' Britains foreshores??

Landowners? Estates? British Waterways  ? A combination of all 3?

The River Severn is just down the road from me, who would I need to ask if I wanted to shoot on it?

Thanks in advance, from clueless of South Wales
