amateur
We switched on our central heating last week, and I did the usual round of bleeding the radiators. Now the boiler is making an intermittent "jet engine" noise - starts off on a high note, then whooshes down. I've never had this before - the boiler, a Potterton Surprima HE was fitted a couple of years ago. Any thoughts from the PW experts?

-Mongrel-
The only thing I can think of that would have a variable tone and make a noise like a jet engine would be the fan. If it's working ok and not grinding/whining/squealing I wouldn't panic. The other possible I suppose is the pump, when you bled it all did you top up the pressure in the rads/check the small tank in the loft is full (depending on whether it's tank fed or a sealed system)? Asa Bear
Air in system. Vent your rads again, check the auto air vent on the boiler is open and as Mongrel said make sure your system has pressure in.
Tim Kelly
Modern condensing boilers have a gas valve that's regulated by the fan, and the fan runs at varying speeds depending on heating demand. When the boiler first starts it usually goes to full flame (high fan speed) and as the system comes up to temperature the fan speed will slow down as less flame is required to maintain the heating. So unless the noise is new and alarming, it is probably just the fan running at different speeds, which your old boiler didn't do. amateur
Thanks for these ideas, I'll give the bleeding thing another go tomorrow.
Harvey1972
We recently had similar symptoms to you, ours turned out to be the secondary heat exchanger partially blocked. Thinking about it, it was only when we were running the hot water, so may not be related to your problem. Clydebuilt
What's the pressure gauge showing? Sounds like its "kettling", I.e. boiling the water without it getting the chance to circulate round the system. Does it spit hot water outside via the pressure relief valve? Could be the pump not circulating the water quick enough causing the noise. check pressure first
