Bad Monkey
Hi guys, i have a problem with my AYA Yeoman O/U M/C that i'm hoping the collective brains of PW might be able to shed some light on. After firing live rounds the gun can be difficult to break open, the top lever operates ok and the locking mechanism releases ok, it's just the barrels don't wanna move. I've tried it with snap caps and it breaks open perfectly, as it does when not loaded. I believe the chambers are 70mm and i'm using 65mm Hull Comp X 28g 7.5 carts, so i know that the carts aren't opening into the forcing cones. Chokes fitted are 1/4 and 1/2, gun doesn't seem to have had much use given it's age prior to me owning it. So if any of you guys have any ideas before i ship it off the the gunsmith i'd appreciate hearin' them. Thanks.
Beretta28g
Are the firing pins not rebounding properly, most likley the bottom id have thought , consequntly they are staying in the impression on the primer head and semi jamming the gun??? Could be
Greenhunter
I'm by no means an expert but have you checked the chamber length? Not that that should make any difference to your gun opening. Have you also tried lubricating the locking lug(if it has one, said I'm no expert!) Could be that it just needs more use.The ejectors could also be tight. That will make it difficult to open too. Check if they are dry and lubricate as necessary. After that it would be a trip to the smiths if it were mine. GH

GH Chambers are longer than carts so no probs there, locking mech, knuckle joint, ejectors etc all well lubed but appreciate your ideas GH, thankyou Are the firing pins not rebounding properly, most likley the bottom id have thought , consequntly they are staying in the impression on the primer head and semi jamming the gun??? Could be I have thought of this, though i haven't a clue how to cure it (other than a visit to the gunsmith) thanks Beretta28g

lambhat
So....what's the cure, out of interest, please. GH To the firing pins not returning? Renewing the springs that push them back through the action face, I'd expect.
Andy H
See if you can look at some of the cartridges that have been in the gun when it was fired and jammed and look at the primers, Look and see if the primers have been pierced by the firing pin , If so you will need a new pin as the pin is probably damaged and piercing the primer and sticking into it. old rooster
I will have a small bet with you that you've got a broken firing pin. It won't dig in to the face of the snap cap but it will dig in (and jam) in the soft metal primer. Many firing pins are made with no radius between the main body and the protruding part which sets up a stress point. When I make replacements I always put a radius at that point to make the pins more reliable. Be interested to hear what it turns out to be. clayman
Everything you describe is a fairly common set of symptoms requiring nothing more than new pins and return springs. See your gunsmith or DIY it with the parts.
Bad Monkey
Thanks for the replies guy. old rooster and clayman, i'm gonna strip it at the weekend and take a look, i've enquired at a-s-i and they have firing pins and springs available. Bad Monkey
Update Well, finally got it to the gunsmith today and he replaced the broken bottom firing pin, took it to Doveridge to try it out and put 75 carts through it, half way through the second box it got really tight again (had to break it across my knee) for a few shots then seemed to be ok again! very strange! I've arranged to take the gun back to him at some point in the near future anyway to have it converted to auto safety, so i'll get him to take a more in depth look.
