Sako Varmint 0.22 rimmy - 80 yards

Recommended Posts

I went out yesterday morning to check the 'long range' accuracy of my Sako rimmy.

Set up a target at 80 yards, and aimed dead on.

The scope is a bog standard Simmons 3-10 x 44, which I always use set at a mag of 7. I can just about hold the gun steady for freehand shots using this mag, and I find that it is a good compromise for bipod shooting up to an approximate self-imposed maximum 70 yards or so.

I have always set this maximum as I thought that the gun was not capable of accurate groups at longer ranges than this.

Anyway, the pics are posted below. The black target is 0.75" diameter, and I have always used these as it is approximately equivalent to a 'kill zone' I even use them when setting in my 0.223.

The first 5-shot group was in a condition of dead calm, with no wind.

I got so excited at this group that I decided to have another go with 10 shots. After 4 shots I had to stop through too much concentration, had a cuppa and then took another 6 shots. Unfortunately in the meantime a breeze had started left to right, and you can see the effects on this.

So, would I extend my practical range beyond 70 yards - probably not. I was struggling to hold dead-centre on the target due to the 7 mag, and I do not believe in playing around with the scope mag when I am shooting in case the zero is affected.

I checked the barrel length this morning, and it was reduced to 15", which confirms what I have always thought and read about - you can really reduce the barrel length on a rimmy without it having too much effect on accuracy.

Some of you may query then why I bought the varmint model in the first place, but I wanted a short, heavy rigid barrel. I do not shoot well freehand with light guns, and the Sako has achieved all I ever wanted.

I have tried several brands of high velocity rounds, and they do not group well - perhaps this is because of the short barrel? However, I did not intend using them anyway.

nice grouping! im quite surprised it is 3" below the .22 i use, uses Eley HB's at 75Metres was about an inch lower im not sure of the make of the actual gun but i think it maybe an CZ or Anshutz, it also has a 4x32 on it aswell.

Could be down to the barrel being shorter, but it all depends aswell at what point it was zeroed.

Good shooting DED ;)

75yards is my point of zero, 100yards is 1 milldot low when on 9x mag. and 50yards is 1 milldot high when on 9x

i look forward to zeroing as well, i have floated my gun properly (found it was touching when on the bipod) so im hoping i have restored the accuracy. I used to fit a 3shot group under a 5p @ 75yrds. However then the accuracy went to pieces at 100yards..... never understood why.

This is why I feel it's best to guage accuracy with a 10 shot group where the 22lr is concerned as you always seem to get the odd flyer .

Best 10 shot group I had at 75 m was 30mm with several of the rounds making a mashed hole .
