roundy
Having read a few articles it seems to be the general consensus that rimfire rifles only need a clean/pull through once in a while... But, does this stand the same for moderators? Would there be an issue with chemical erosion in the mod and also the barrel end/screw thread? I CLEAN MY HMR AND THE MOD AFTER EVERY OUTING AND YOUD BE AMAZED AT THE **** THAT COMES OUT OF THEM ESPECIALLY THE MOD,I WOULD RECOMMEND CLEANING EVERY TIME AND I ONLY CLEAN THE MOD IN SOAPY WATER AS FOR THE BARREL IF YOU PUT A DRY PATCH THROUGH AFTER IT SHOULD BE OKAY CHEERS DAVE
Gimlet
Yes you should clean the mod, particularly with an HMR. I use a a SAk on mine for cheapness and lightness and if the baffles get heavily fouled they do burn out more quickly. You can also get ignition of residue producing a loud bang and lots of smoke. I clean my HMR every 100 rounds and do the mod at the same time- soak with bore solvent and scrub in hot soapy water. Cleaning the barrel regularly means easier cleaning and I find mine does not need 'shooting in'. Bang on again straight away. .22 is less fussy especially with subs, but the residue is just as corrosive so do your gun a favour and keep it clean. david hunter
yes this is true they do not need cleaning as often as centre fires.but cleaning after an outing gives peace of mind.i clean all my mods with carb cleaner £4 something from spares world or any car spares shop. Redgum
what do you guys clean your barrels with(outside) I use parker hale gun oil on a rag and just wipe the gun down with that and Brunox for inside, also copper solvent KG12.As for the Mod,best keep em clean, I have a Ase ultra on my hmr and left it for the first 500rnds, big mistake,it took a fair bit of cleaning, once I managed to get it apart,I would say its best to give it a clean every couple of hundred rnds. roundy
Interesting, that'll be why my new (to me) CZ smoked like a steam train when I fired her for the first time. The MOD must be caked in ****, I tried stripping it the other day and it looked filthy and I couldn't get the bottom end cap off!! Can I use the same bore cleaner for my shotty on the MOD? Don't see why not. I use Bisley bore cleaner and thats fine. An old bronze shotgun brush is very handy for the tube and (for SAKs) the large holes in the baffle. A toothbrush sized brass or bronze brush cleans out the threads.
richie223
i clean my hmr twice a year :look: i find after cleaning it it usually takes around 20 rounds to get back on song,so i dont bother much as it shoots better dirty
Colster
My HMR generally gets used for laying up so I leave the bolt open after each shot and let the smoke blow through... find the mod stays a lot cleaner that way. When it needs cleaning, WD40 cleans it up nicely.
steve_b_wales
The inside of the barrel on my BRNO .22LR has not been cleaned for around 2 years, and I've fired at least 1500 rounds through it. It's still very accurate. The mod's are cleaned after a few 100 rounds, and I just wipe all barrels on my firearms with a light smear of gun oil. Alpha Mule
When you say 'not cleaned' do you mean untouched, or just a bore snake, or anything short of a wire brush? What about your HMR? Edited December 6, 2011 by Alpha Mule
steve_b_wales
When you say 'not cleaned' do you mean untouched, or just a bore snake, or anything short of a wire brush? What about your HMR? Nothing at all mate. Not a brush or anything else. Even I'm surprised at how accurate it still is. You've fired it, so you know how it is. My 17HMR has not had it's barrel scrubbed yet, and I won't do it until I notice a drop in accuracy.
buckaroo23
i hardly ever clean my .17hmr just a going over with a duster before it goes back in the safe, steve b what gun oil do you use on the barrels

It's amazing an 'old' gun, never cleaned (inside), yet still cuts grass stalks at 60 meters. I'm not surprised you didn't want to sell it to me. roundy
Managed to finally dismantle my mod after some hard work this afternoon, I don't think it's ever been cleaned to be honest! When I did get it apart the baffles don't look that meaty to be honest? I am not even too sure about the brand, it has no marking either...
Gimlet
As long as the bore holes through the baffles aren't burnt and ragged it should be fine. Just keep it clean. Looking at the photo, did you clean it in sweet and sour sauce? You could be on to something there.
roundy
Lol, Bombay potato actually ;-) To be honest I might get myself a SAK for what they cost, this one is a bit weedy and doesn't bring the noise down much at all. If I want to replace this one with a SAK how do I get rid? I only have one slot for a .17 mod, can I ask an RFD to dispose of it? Although I do have a slot for a. 22 mod so I could just get a SAK anyway right as they fit the same?
Colster
If the record for the mod on your FAC has no serial number recorded then you could do either. Go to gun shop and buy a new SAK (for your air-rifle) then either give the old one to them to destroy or if it still looks in ok condition, sell it as off ticket. roundy
No serial number, cool... I am assuming you can buy a SAK off ticket as and "air rifle" mod ...? Anyone know what thread a CZ Varmint 16" has ??
