Grand vitara advice

Ok chaps (and chapesses) I'd like some advice please. I have been offered a suzuki grand vitara, auto, s reg, 117,000 miles, 2.5lv6 petrol, for £1200. I would much prefer a diesel, but at the price, it'd pay for several months of diesel.

But does anyone know if and S reg vitara is any good? Is 117,000 way too many miles on a petrol v6? Are there any specific problems I should be aware of to look out for?

I would obviously be using it as my shooting wagon, aswell as a daily driver. Carting all my decoying gear around, and occasionally a school run, take the dog out. It is a bit low on boot space, but I think it should cope.

I mainly want to switch as I have a bad leg, and want an auto. And whilst im changing, I thought I would go for a 4x4.

Just hope it doesnt turn into, get a defender, no get a jap fight...

Many thanks for any thoughts,

Pete

117,000 miles on a 'relatively' modern car shouldn't be an issue, gone are the days where if it had done 100k you'd be worried. If it has been well maintained then it wouldn't worry me at all. That is the trick of it though, IF it has been well maintained.

General condition should give an idea, look for silly things like is the engine bay clean? If they can be ***** to keep the engine bay clean then they probably kept it serviced, a full service history would of course be much better although a recent service history say from 60-70k miles would alleviate many fears for me, before that it may well have been dealer maintained anyway.

As for it being petrol and thirsty (ish), if you get on with it, LPG is always an option. If it cost a grand to fit, how long to recoup your money at 70 odd pence per litre?

exactly. Im just worried about the high mileage...

i have an xl7 2.7 v6 petrol and the chap that does my services says if looked after it then 200k is no probs on a modern car,

when new cars are tested they stick them on a machine and run them and run them they just cant afford to make cars now a days that wont last,

or so i have been told

I've had two mate, a 2.5V6 1999 , now on 2001 2.0TD.

They are reliable, cheap to run and insure, very capable off road, easy to lift.

I'd snatch that at £1200.

Only two expensive things to check other than engine, box and chassis. Catalitic converter £300-400

Timing Chains (three of them) £300-400 +vat, need changing at 100-110, so check for that.

Good luck. :good:

thanks for the tips guys. I'll get z garage check. See when the last service was, and if the timing chains haven't been done, i'll offer 900 hopefully settle on 1000.

i have had 3 vits now and my current one is a 20l td and its fab had the 22 lift done and its auto so no gear changes to worry about, never been stuck in anything at al (touch wood)http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3559/vitara004.jpg

i have got to say to sell it would to cut off my legs,

but i think it will be up for sale in the new year, nice and clean with a few hedge scraps but nothing bad all works as it should and just clocked 110k on it too, i do all my own servicing to keep the costs down,

i think you will have to look very hard to beat a vit thats well set up. they have more room in the cab area than most and they do just about go anywhere,
