What powder to use - Hornet

Recommended Posts

I'm waiting for my FAC to arrive so I can go and pick up the CZ 527 in .22 Hornet I have on hold at my local gun shop.

I'm itching to get it home!

I'm going to be reloading for it and am wondering what powder would be best to use for it. Seeing as it uses so little, I don't want to buy a full tub of a duff one.

From what I've been reading, I gather people like Lil Gun or H110 but I'm a bit clueless about the differences between all the powders.

I also understand 35G V-max bullets would be a good place to start??

Any advise of suggestions would be greatfully recieved.

I've always used Lil gun in my Hornet - it gives the best velocity with 40gr+ bullets and runs at 2/3 the pressure of 110. That means your brass lasts longer and working up a load is quicker because even a full case won't over pressure with the lighter bullets.

Another tip - try small pistol primers. Rifle primers are a bit over powered in such a small case and you may well find the pistol primed loads more accurate. :good:

Lil Gun recipe? My most accurate load was 13gr lil gun under a 35gr V-Max, CCI small pistol primer loaded to just short of magazine length and crimped with a Lee factory crimp die. They used to shoot well under an inch at 100 yards.

13gr is the listed max load but there's no sign of pressure at all. What it would do in your rifle though I don't know - 12gr is the suggested start load so I would recommend you work up from that. :good:
