lacrowbasher
I have recently got a permission with a large wood about 18 acres and wanted some advice how to shoot the pigeons that go in and out. What is the best way to set up in the woods? I have never done roost shooting but would know how to spot the tell tale signs ie feathers etc . I would like to try to shoot at different times of the day the woods are surrounded by fields and a few cover crops also the odd pond. Any advice would be much appreciated! Dave. Actionpigeons
The best thing you can do is sit in your car if possible, or stand and watch to see where the flight lines are. The flight lines will change depending on the wind direction. A hide is not always a good thing with roost shooting, as you may want to move. As long as you are dressed in camo, cover your face, have a dark back ground, and most importantly stand still, you should have some fun. Good luck

Take your gun with you though, you could get it right first trip. ATB, Lee
deny essex
Sounds a nice little permission, roost, decoying and maybe a possible duck flight pond. As already said watch and check for flightlines, poo n feathers under trees and on branches to show their favourite roosting trees, not always best to be directly under the tree for me anyways always, a little more confortable 10 mtrs away or so. Stay still and skin coverd until setting the shot. Try not to over shoot the wood from the same position i.e too frequently. You didnt say if your useing shotgun or air rifle, a little more cover and finess if useing an air rifle.
humperdingle
If you get set-up, Stay very still. I've sat and watched pigeons land no more than 20 feet away from me, for up to 5 minutes, and only when I move the slightest amount, they clatter off in to the distance! I find a piece of netting (I use Stealth net) about 2m x 2m, with a hole cut in it to use like a poncho, works well for roost shooting. Means you can walk about, but be concealed in a couple of seconds.
