mr wright-watt
did any one use the new impax paper case this season in a light sbs game gun. I found them very punchy bruised my middle finger and face, over the last 45 years I've always found them to be very sweet to shoot and my friends with damascus barreled hammer guns would only use impax, I used 150 on the first day and felt ruffed up luckily I had 250 william evans marlboro in reserve, my retailer asked eley if anything had changed apart from the colour the brass the price, they said not, the cartridge is well within tolerance, any other impax users? regards ken wright-watt. Sprinter
Ah now i had a wee dalliance with these the season before last. I bought the paper cased impax because way back when i was a lad i shot great quantities of the plastic cased variety and found them very smooth to shoot. However, when i ran these in my damascus i found that they were a good bit punchier than i remembered. Picking up the spent cases after the end of one drive i noticed that on some of them the crimps had been nibbled and surmised that as they are not a "true" 2.5" cartridge being 67mm they were touching the forcing cones in the chamber. After the day i decided to check the boxes and it states on the box 67mm, suitable for 2.5" chambered guns. By my reckoning 67mm is about 2.64" or there abouts. After this i switched to Hull Three Crowns in paper as these are a 65mm cartridge (which is still a gnats nadger over 2.5") and things were much better. So i reckon like me your chambers are machined to a proper english 2.5" and the carts are touching the forcing cones when they are fired causing a pressure build up giving you a smack across the chops............ matone
I`ve never understood how this ever came about, surely cartridges for 2 1/2" guns should be made to accomodate that length chamber, not 2 5/8 or whatever! Hull,RC and Gamebore seem to get it right tho`.
Alycidon
Not tried the new ones, mainly use on OU these days. Have a few years stock of 'old' plastic case Impax. As others have said Hull do a nice equivalent, its called Imperial from memory, Three Crowns is closer to Eley Grand Prix from memory, ie 30gr. I did use a box of Imperials 26gr on a partridge drive one day a few years ago, I was shooting pretty straight so it was a fair test. They killed adequately up to about 30/35 yards ( which was as far as I needed to push them) through 1/2 and 3/4 choke and were very smooth to shoot all be it in an OU. A +1 I`ve used a lot of Hull Imperial 1oz and they`re pretty impressive performers on everything !
Sprinter
Three Crowns is closer to Eley Grand Prix from memory, ie 30gr. Well sitting on the table in from of me is a Three Crowns in paper case which is 28g of sixes. Thought i'd better dig one out of the cartridge bag to make sure, although i bet they do them in 30g flavour as well....... Having just checked the website they do the paper cased flavour in 28 & 30g and if you want a plastic cased Three Crowns they also do them in 32g The imperials can go even lighter 26/28 and 30g but only with a plastic case. For me shooting an old gun you can't beat the smell of toasted paper/cardboard infused with burnt power as it flys over your shoulder out of the ejectors :yp:
Salopian
Sorry to say that you cannot trust Eley nowadays, lots of changes with methods, components and Staff. The customer is ALWAYS wrong.
