Hi,have you dried out yet :lol::good:

Yes i've heard it,doesn't bother me too much,Nikki talked to a breeder yesterday who has 5 Tollers and only one of them now does it,so it looks like it could be possible to train that out of them a bit :hmm:

Easily trained for what, Tomm? - it's my understanding that the first toller's yet to run a field trial across the water. If you've got an update on that I'm all ears.

The first one that did trial on this side is below

lovely dog and bright to boot, but "just wants to please?" Ha - that's antithetical to any toller I've ever known (and there have been many). Wants to please themselves, maybe. Wouldn't go highly recommending them to anyone as a first gundog either.

ours is trained for picking up, will sit in a hide all day pigeon shooting or will quite happily pick up on pheasant shoots and has done so many times, i only have experience of ours as not seen man but like i say ours is very eager to please and was lovley to train unlike some of our other dogs, sprngers and a cocker, i am on the works laptop at the mo but will upload a pic when i get home.

Tomm, waiting eagerly for that snap of your toller.

Here's one that I've working with for a while -

atypical for the breed as is yours in that he's a pleasure to have around, an energetic worker (especially for rough shooting over) and has the typical toller smarts in spades. He also will be running field trials this year - after having accomplished his AKC "Master Hunter" title (read advanced working tests) - and I expect him to be competitive if his owner can get the drill down for what's required in US trials.

Now how 'bout that photo - and also whether or not you've had a yen to run retriever trials with your toller?

  • 2 months later...

Well we collected our Toller Puppy from Phillip & Amanda at Fallowfen today, can't recommend/praise them enough, they put a lot of good work into what they do which was evident from the first telephone conversation we had a few months ago right through to collection today :good:

I know it's early days but the Pup has been really easy going and attentive with no problems at all,i'm looking forward to spending lots of time with her :good:

Good luck and enjoy your dog :good:

Phillip is a top bloke and will always find time to help you with training or anything else dog related for that matter.

I have three Tollers and seven pups as of 3 days ago so will be quite busy myself for a while

Do your homework, the breed has been around a lot longer than you have.

I have done my home work, and yes they have been around a lot longer than I have but not working in the UK, least not in any numbers. As the Original PW member say in one of his post "the breed being fairly rare" I am saying, they are new breed to the Uk.

We have the best gundogs in the world, it shows as a lot of people set their standards by our working breeds. The Labrador, the English Springer and the English pointer, to name just three have been bred over many years to do what they do, and are the best of the best!

Not to take issue with you, actionpigeons, as I agree with 90-odd percent of what you've written. But there have always been tolling dogs (or in the vernacular, "piping" or decoy dogs) in the UK, long since before the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was recognized as a breed. The problem with tollers nowadays, as a working gundog, is the "wrong" people seem to get their mitts on them - and they don't get adequately trained or worked as a gundog, either over there or in North America. It's apt to change, however, at least in these parts - but given their origins (in North America) as tolling dogs for market hunters, they really weren't a gundog a'tall - sort of neither fish nor fowl among breeds, as the tolling (luring) for wildfowl was their stock in trade. Retrieving apparently came later, as did working them as flushing dogs which is perhaps their forte (from my experience).
