Kes
Tried a Meopta scope and a Schmidt and Bender today - the first 3-12 X56 the second 2.5-10 X 56. Perhaps its my eyes but although different reticals, they were hard to seperate, except on price. Anyone offer any advice, based on experience please? Also I am looking at .243's - Remington (modified with Mag) I can live with, Sako, fine but rather expensive even second hand. I dont like the american finishes and would like a laminated stock stainless and fluted barrel, not bothered about bying a good model second hand - anyone been through this and willing to offer advice? It would be appreciated. Thanks, Kes
12borejimbo
Both very good scopes, but the Schmidt will take the biscuit. Ive got a Schmidt 3-12x50 ontop of a Tikka 595 in 22-250. I absolutely love it, very accurate, lovely action, well balanced,. made by Sako, but half the price!
Poacher
very fine reticles but excellent glass for the money.

No they are made by Tikka or if you preffer both are owned by Berretta an neither are as good as they once were as competition effectively removed

Meopta actually use the same glass as the S+Bender the internals and finish are better on S+Bender but should be no difference in clarity. Myself? i would by a Sako with a good action and trigger- re-barrel it with a Border archer and buy a laminate stock new unfinished. Will come to just over the 1k Or get a Sako with a decent barrel and stock £500-£1000. A .243" could be any .308 class action (sako are specific) do not get one with the wrong bolt head size that will require extra work. Loads of Sako foresters out there or 75's
kent
Even back when they made the 595 Yep, metal bottom iron and mags to plastic - berretta improvements Then the T3 that wonder of modern engineering over the 595 I saw an old 30-06 595 do a single raggy hole during a dsc1 test this autumn BTW, it had been bedded but that was it
Gimlet
I've got a Meostar R1 3-12 X 56. Its a cracking scope. I went stalking with a guy who had a S&B 8 X 56 and in the field they're impossible to split. The RI could do with a finer reticle, especially for foxing or rabbits. Fine for stalking. Meoptas have crept up in price though, they're not the steals that they once were but some second hand bargains to be had. Got my doubts about the Hungarian S&Bs. Mind you I had about Duralyts too til I bought one for my .222 and now I'm converted.

Whats not to like. I have both types and there aint no difference other than the price

coyotemaster
Can't comment much on the scopes as most are relatively unknown to me but if you are buying used in .243 have a good smith scope the barrel for you if you are not proficient yourself. The .243 is a pretty hot little number and can easily have an issue with a lot of throat wear. If you pull the bolt and look down the bore you should see the lands standing proudly on a fresh barrel. ian_in_the_midlands
As said before, a very fine reticle. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on your type of shooting. I also found the finish scratched very easily. Edited February 18, 2012 by ian_in_the_midlands
