Proof House cock-up

Just sent this email to the Birmingham Proof House-

Sir. Between the 21st and 28th of April this year I had a Tikka .243 WIN’ and a T8 moderator sent to you for re-proof after the barrel had been re-threaded.

I picked the rifle up from the gunsmith and have used it for the last two months without any thought to looking at the proof mark on the moderator.

Tonight, whilst showing the moderator to a friend in order to allow him to see the proof mark, it suddenly dawned on me that you have marked the moderator- “.243REM†instead of “.243WINâ€.

How the hell can a proof house mistake a .243WIN rifle for a .243REM.

There is no such calibre as a .243REM only a “6mm REMâ€. And I haven’t got a “6mmRemâ€, my rifle is a “.243WINâ€

Who is responsible for such a stupid mistake.

G.M.

What the hell do I do now

I doubt that this is the first time that they have cocked up. Whats the betting that they a caveat buried in their terms of business. Irrespective of this the mistake is theirs assuming that all your paperwork checks out, and your gunsmith has not dropped a clanger which has been repeated by the proof house.

They need to rectify the situation, and cover your reasonable costs incurred.

I have just informed the police that you have an unregistered firearm and any moment know you`ll hear the helicopters and then the splintering of wood as the door goes in.

I`d lie face down on the floor with hands behind your head if I were you.

It’s one of those things isn’t it. You get the rifle and mod’ back and just go off to play without any thought to actually looking to see if they have done it correctly.

Had a phone call @ ½ hour ago from the Proof house apologising and asking me to bring, it in so that they can re-mark it whilst I wait. :D

He was a nice enough chap, and although I wasn’t too happy about the cock-up, I did have to smile when he stated that there would be “No chargeâ€.

Nice of him wasn’t it.:D

dare say they will just stamp over it and make a right mess :D

They don't actually stamp the moderators Nick, it would dent them. Instead I think they laser-cut the proof mark into the metal. Don’t know what they will do; perhaps they will just put a load of XXXXXXs through the old mark and then re-cut the new one. I’m going in tomorrow so I will post and let you know how I got on.

If they re-stamp it so be it, its not like you sit at home staring at it, is it, or do you? :D

No fister I don’t just sit there looking at my rifles, which is why I never noticed the mistake until now. Seems like my apology wasn’t accepted.

Well, went to the Proof House this morning and saw a nice chap behind the counter who admitted that it was his fault as he "Had so many of them to do"

He took it off and came back 10 minutes later with the new proof mark added.

Could look worse I suppose, but as I am buying a nice neoprene cover I don’t suppose it will be seen………unless I stand and look at it of course. :drinks::drinks::beer::)

Im glad that youve got the problem sorted, but in my opinion its a bloody mess. As an apprentice engineer I worked in a glass works and spent 6 months in the mould shop. We had some absolute master engravers who performed artistic miracles. I once cocked up the stamping on a set of moulds and can hear the foreman even now going balistic. I did however learn from my mistake and corrected the error.

It doesnt look like your pseudo friend at the proof house has learned anything. If that mess was on my equipment I would be very angry. It would have been better to have windy ground the whole area and then acid etch the required data, hence not weakening the structure further. This would not however be a ten minute fix. Perfectionist I may be, but even after 30+ years I can still feel Regi Rudds boot stuffed up my backside.

Can I suggest a letter and some photos to the various sporting magazines.

I agree, but it does look a lot worse than it actually is, and I think that the fact that it has been enlarged by the photo’ doesn’t help.

I was quite amazed by how lax they were really because I wasn’t even asked for my FAC, although I don’t think I needed it.

As for the trip around the works….no chance. Anyone wanting a trip around the Proof House will have to cough up @ £120. Minimum party size - 4 and the maximum - 10. Luncheon in Board Room can be arranged (menus & prices on request.) All at an extra charge. :drinks:

I did however get to have a nose into the gun-room where there were racks of rifles and moderators waiting to be sorted.

A money-making venture indeed. :drinks:
