the hitman
Hi chaps , i am a bit concerned about my 5 yr old cocker's teeth . I have tried brushing them but he has a heavy coating of tartar on them that i cant budge. His gums seem a bit red as well . Any ideas or is it a trip to the vet. Cheers Hitman. oscarsdad
No help in the short term but my dogs get a dentastix every day and also a couple of raw carrots and this keeps their teeth nice and white.
apache
The dog needs an anaesthetic and the teeth scaling and polishing. Then you can look after them by brushing. By this point its too late.

andy198712
any particular raw bone? i'm a bit nervous about them... carrots sound ok!
activeviii
mine use to have the problem but a bone every now and then sorted it out. I go to butcher and get a 4" of rib beef bone. feed it as it, not cooked. let him eat what he wants and take it off him at end of day
kent
The thought of cleaning a dogs teeth with a brush makes me laugh, but also sad that things have gone this far in our world. Red gums and tartar is not good and needs sorting and yes it sounds like a knock out job at the vets to me. Seriously consider the feed it is on, fresh uncooked carrots and apple etc. Proper meat (giving fully digestable protein), rice (boiled in stock from bones and carcass) add cheap frozen peas etc. Most of all give it something to chew on Beef shin bone raw etc or if it upsets its digestive system try solid rubber chews (some are available with flavours or like the kong that you fill with other food). Properly fed dogs have no issue at all with teeth and certainly dont need a toothbrush. Feed them on chicken feed that you simply add water and your heading to trouble in more areas than just the teeth.
arwen3513
lamb ribs and neck bones, also chicken carcass, and wings, supermarket often have meat in the basic range that are cheap as a starter place, and occaisionally lamb chops near on sell by dates. so long as its raw and not cooked, most people like a leg of lamb or beef that has been de boned so most butchers have these available. jan
