shoot31
Hi just had a .17 put on my ticket and would like to buy a .17 savage hmr..just wondering if anyone knows a thing or two about this gun and if its worth me buying? thnx
Devon Fox
I have one, and I love it! Its as accurate as any other 17HMR, the stock is fantastic and I would consider it a very pretty and well made gun, CZ do something very similiar in looks, ask my buddy bulletboy who has just bought the CZ and he is made up with it, so its another contender if you like the looks? downsides - its heavy, the mag has a release tang that is a little fiddly, when the gun has the safety on it does not lock the bolt, so if its on your back the bolt will slide open. those few things apart - good gun. Dekers
There are plenty of rifles to chose from, an honest poster above, many will love ANY rifle, and just as many will probably hate the same rifle. Savage rimfires are not for me, plenty of better and/or cheaper in my opinion. Honest opinion is, NEVER buy a rifle because you think it looks pretty, someone will always think it doesn't. Buy what you want, most work ok, but Savage is close to the bottom of my list!

Good advice Mark. Also consider the CZ 455 Thumbhole Varmint in .17HMR of which I have just bought. It's a beautiful rifle and extremely accurate, using 17gr Hornady V-Max bullets. ATB in whatever you choose.
shoot31
THANKS FOR THE REPLYS..i like the look of the savage much more than the cz thumbhole..ive also been told that the savage is an out of the box gun..in other words no upgrades to make it better where as the cz the trigger is horrid and needs an upgrade.ive held the cz and to me it was a bit boaring having said that i do know that cz are a good make and are a work horse of a gun..all forums or sites that i have been on rate the savage and say that its a tack driver with good grouping..this rifle will not be a target gun only for vermin..i have a daystate fac air rifle and love it,its running at 43ft lbs with bis mags but want that bit more range and new ground is perfect for .

Mine has never been fussy either, the winchesters are marginally the best, but only slightly I forgot about the trigger - it is fantastic

SittingBull
CZ455 thumbhole was £420 gun only as 16" barrel - slightly cheaper with 20" barrel.

The gentleman doesn't want a CZ 455 Thumbhole Varmint cos he said it felt boring.,We are all different I suppose.I love my CZ 455-it's a beautiful rifle, that's all that counts! shoot31
"GUYS ANY TIPS ON WHAT TO ZERO THE GUN AT? my daystate fac 45ft lb is setup for 60 yards and is flat to 80...most i think say 100 yard zero with a 2inch drop at 150 is this correct with the .17 hmr? plenty say they shoot out to 200 yards no trouble"me im not so sure about that statement as seems abit extreme and 200 yards is a very long way.. wildfowler.250
Always zerod mine at 50. It's less distance to walk and basically flat to 100 anyway.
SittingBull
Sorry, I didn't notice the bit about not wanting that! Enjoy your Savage
eccles
Got my savage 1in high at 100y zero about 125y and you can shoot rabbits out to 200y as long as its not to windy, no prob.
shoot31
guys what i dont get nor understand is that they say a 100 yard zero is 2 inches high at 150 then the hold over at 200 yards must be massive therefore people that say they consistantly shoot rabbits out at 200 yards is questionable OR IS IT NOT?....so with a 2 inch drop at 150 it must be atleast 5/6 inch holdover at
eccles
Most of my rabbits are shot at between 50y and 125y but can be taken at 200y its the wind not the hold over that's the problem with the HMR.No different to hold over on my 223 which is zeroed at 200y 6.8 low at 300y.With practice you will get to know a bit about the HMR performance. shoot31
your right about that...i took the time to find out the good and bad points on my daystate fac...for an fac airgun its deadly and hits soooooo hard with bisley mags...i managed two great shots with mine at 110 yards(measured)a rabbit and a crow...the pellet had gone all the way through the crow which was a surprise"not a head shot though...bunny was stone dead but conditions were perfect with little to no wind.its a great gun for one of my shoots but no good on others hance the need for the .17 hmr..i do like the sound of the new .17 hornet centre fire they have just done"over 3000 fps now thats awesome
eccles
The Hornady 17gr 2550 zeroed 1 and a half inch high 100y = -3.4 inch at 200y. The 17 hornet is a totally different ball park and a lot more expensive on ammo.As to your last post what are you going to shoot at more than 100y if its foxes forget the 17 HMR.
