colin lad
not wanting to start that old lr or hmr debate i am going for a bit of crow shooting at work before anyone says about shooting in the air these birds are in our large barns feeding on the turkey food they will be about 50/60 yards away was just wondering if any of you guys have shot crows with both i know both are good but is the 40grain .22 or the more explosive 17 grain .17 vmax better, i do have 40+ of the 20 grain .17 hollow points what i found not too good on bunnies as they went through them but they may be fine on the tougher crow your thoughts would be good thanks colin
wildfowler.250
If I was shooting in a barn,(although id probs use an airgun) I would go for the HMR as less ricochets
colin lad
If I was shooting in a barn,(although id probs use an airgun) I would go for the HMR as less ricochets when i said barns they are big barns over 120 yards long and 60 wide and brick built to about 12ft i will be sitting in one and shooting across the yard to the other i will put some turkey food down on the floor about 20 yards inside entrance colin
Catweazle
50/60 yds is easy 22LR territory, but they might bounce and puncture your barn. 17 VMAX don't exit in such a solid lump, so might be safer.
Salop Matt
I would argue that what ever round you use chances are that the impact will send them flying what ever cal you use as they are such alert clever quarry. For me the HMR as its flater over that long distance and will happily do the job to, should be a small scale pillow fight ! lol
Rimfireboy
Don't forget that the 20 grain hmr's aren't as explosive as the 17 grain ballistic tips. They penetrate more rather than break up. They will go through crows so easily. I shot some clean through a 3 inch wooden post at 140 yards. Yes it surprised me a bit but it's true. They really do penetrate more than you might think. I would recommend .22 Remington cbee hollow points. Reduced energy and good expansion make them ideal at the range you mention. I have used them to good effect. If you try these, make sure they are the long rifle hollow points and not the shorter solid longs. The cb longs and equivalent aren't very accurate much past 30 yards I find. colin lad
i use winnie subs in my .22 for my bunnie's but i do have 45 cci segmenting .22 left i tried them on the rabbits and didn't like as much as the winnies so may use them up as any that go through the crow will break up on the wall behind :hmm: colin oops sorry double post Edited March 17, 2012 by colin lad
malkiserow
20p a crow! Sod that, use the ..22 and get in range
bedwards1966
As long as ricochet isn't going to be a dangerous problem, I'd use a .22. Chances are in a barn the noise will send them off whichever you use, and unless you need to use a .17 to avoid ricochet or damage then you'd be as well to use a .22 at a fraction of the ammo cost, the ranges you speak of don't really need a .17. colin lad
the lr it is then thanks chaps, they have started nesting 200 yards away still on works ground so will hit them hard in the barns then take the 12g and blast the nest too colin

I have to hit these to, the farmer is sick of them thanks mate we have been getting more and more recently they know that pickings are easy round the turkey sheds have even seen them sitting on the cattle troffs helping themselves to the cattle food while the cows are feeding colin
