jgguinness
Hi all Having been a SGC holder for just over a year, I have finally put in for my FAC. Posted the first one, non recorded a couple of weeks back, but it appears Royal Mail lost it, so put in another this Tuesday, recorded delivery. Lady rang me today to say they had received it, and arranged a visit for just over a week ago! I have put in for .22LR for close range and discrete vermin control, .17HMR for medium range vermin control and a .223 for long range vermin and fox control (although I believe Northumbria class fox as vermin anyway) Originally I emailed the firearms office and asked if they had a prefered calibre for fox, as I have used a mates 22-250, and they replied it was fine, or suggested I put in for .243 incase I wanted deer in the future. Now I am confused, when the FEO comes out should I ask for both a .223 and a .243?? Also, what kind of grilling can I expect? The SGC visit was no problems. I have permission on around 800acre (passed for up to 243) on one farm but spread out a bit. On my application I put said farm plus "any other land where future permission may be granted" I understand that generally a first FAC is a closed one, however I do accompany a few mates on farms where they have permission but I do not, but shoot in their guidance so-to speak. Would a closed ticket not allow me to accompany them with my rifle when I get it?? Sorry for all the q's Kind regards Jonathan
apache
If they would let you have the .243 instead of the .223 you could shoot deer with it later, whereas you couldn't with the .223. I can't see them granting both a .223 and a .243 if you just have fox to shoot. If you had deer available then they should. If you land has been cleared for other shooters and you have permission then you should be ok (assuming they give you 'semi-closed' rather than on specified land). You remembered to ask for moderators for them all?
bedwards1966
Now I am confused, when the FEO comes out should I ask for both a .223 and a .243?? Probably not likely to get both, unless you put down deer for the .243, in which case they may allow you to have both - asking your FEO at the interview is the best way of finding that out, they should be quite helpful in that way. Also, what kind of grilling can I expect? The SGC visit was no problems. I have permission on around 800acre (passed for up to 243) on one farm but spread out a bit. It's not much different to a SGC application, and you'll need to answer the safety questions still, including the dangerous range of the rifles - i.e 1.5 miles for the .17, 1.5 for the .22 and so on. The land you shoot on must be passed for the calibre you are shooting or larger - assuming you get a closed certificate, a few forces issue open on a first grant. Again, your FEO can advise you but if some of the land is not already passed then your FEO will pass it (assuming he considers it safe) and then you won't have any problems. Sharpshooter.123
Not sure if you would get all those on a first application, I had 22 17 and 223 and could only have two so I chose 22lr and 223 because it suits me and my land all they ask is why you want them! Some forces won't give a 243 centerfire on first application. Atb matt
jgguinness
Hmm, hopefully will get all,I live on a farm so the 22lr is ideal around the paddocks, and the grass fields that back onto houses, but the 17hmr is ideal for day-time and longer range shots. The .223 would be for foxes and long range vermin. Although a mate has both a 17 rem and a 204 ruger and he reckons they are as good as. 223 Jonathan Edited March 24, 2012 by jgguinness
Sharpshooter.123
A 223 is ideal for fox I know some people have issues with wind and ask for a 243 strictly for vermin and get it but it all comes down to what the feo thinks is suitable! jjay1299
I had my interview today for fac and the officer came out and passed the land for 22lr and 22-250 but in the next breath said i needed experience shooting over land before they will give a closed ticket and i will have to use at my club only ... weirdly, i was under the impression that if you had written permission on passed land and justifiable reason to have a firearm you should be granter closed permission. Shows how wrong i was
super sharp shooter
I applied and had a letter stating that I had experience in shooting centre fire and they were happy with that.

Shows how wrong i was That makes zero sense, I mean from the feo not you. I'd get onto basc or other chosen shooting organisation because what they are saying is ridiculous. What if you have zero interest in joining a shooting club and shooting targets, I know I don't. This is why many of us despair at firearms licensing in this country, this feo sounds like a total clown.
