Hopper Bopper
Hi guys, I have just started to buy full body pig decoys. What proportion of heads up to feeding decoys do people use? Are the heads up decoys 'look outs' ? Is it best to mounts the deeks on springs to give movement? Many thanks HB

Many thanks HB In my experience, it doesn't matter whether the decoys are all heads up or all feeders. It's good to have movement but not essential. It is possible to decoy pigeons with a totally static layout. I shot 27 pigeons on sunday and only dead birds were used. Decoyed superbly. deny essex
As Motty says they will come to static birds real or artificial in any style at times. We all have our favourite ways of a layout and decoys, be it real or artificial. As we all know there are different days where we have to use different ways, hence all the kit many of us cart around We use the different style decoys as statics, different pattern shapes if any shape at all. Add floaters , rotary's, flappers , peckers to add movement to the pattern when we feel the birds may be a little reluctant to come near our static pattern. My landrover is like a toolbox, has most off the bits and pieces of equipment in it but I always go for a static pattern first and watch any birds reaction to it, if they come in well then I leave it alone , if they seem reluctant to commit even after altering the pattern I will add movement as I feel fit. Apart from the basic's in decoying Its a learning thing, the more you watch the birds the more you get a "feel" to the way they will/may react to your layout on a given day, mix that with some good fieldcraft and the rest is down to the woody to want to play. Cranfield
Its whatever works for you, I doubt there is any perfect method. I use only shell artificial decoys , always on spring sticks to give them movement. However, I also use dead birds on cradles , which of course don't move, but they do provide "bulk" to a pattern. I like movement and for that reason also use a rotary and dead bird floaters.
