coptleigh
My springer picked his first tick up, i noticed it late on friday night(11pm), I did not have a tick removal implement, so a quick call to my local vets emergency number for advice, the on call nurse, said to hold, twist and pull it off, then clean the wound with salty water, this i did and got it off, but over the weekend and reading further into it, sites state that you must not twist and remove, only ever use a proper tool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The site of the bite is a small hard lump now, does not look infected, but the worry that some of its mouthparts are still in there?? did check on removal, and couldn't see anything!! Any further advice would be welcome, or is it a trip to the vets to have them check it properly? He was wormed and flea'd ( Effipro) on March 13th, flea control covered ticks also, but how long can they attach before being killed by the control substance... PS correct removal tool now purchased. Beretta28g
Well i use a O'Tom tick removal tool and the intructions tell you to twist anti clockwise to remove. I have also removed them by rubbing round the tick in a anti clockwise direction that works too.

hedd-wyn
If you rub them gently with a thick layer of soap they usually come off as well as clean the bite mark. Real soap (as in a bar) not the gel and plenty of patience.
apache
Just buy an O'tom. Less than a fiver. Every dog owner should have one. We have a little doggy kit that we take away if we go anywhere with the dog and there's one in it.

Tis1979
My brother takes his dog (cocker) over Richmond park regularly and with all the deer the ticks are a common issue with him he's using the o'tom, I tend to pull any that get in my lab (he's only ever had a few) look at the tick after removed and see if the heads still on. Real soap (as in a bar) not the gel and plenty of patience. FYI the methods that stop the tick breathing through its skin or shock it ie above and Vaseline cigaret ends meths etc cause the tick to vomit back into the bloodstream causing a much higher rate of Lymes infection than dry removal . Also the clockwise or anti clockwise is a myth it makes no difference. If the tick is left in for more than 24 hours the risk of infection is much higher so quick removal is important. I have never found the tick removers much use but each to his own . Edited April 9, 2012 by utectok

Dirty Harry
I tend to pull any that get in my lab (he's only ever had a few) look at the tick after removed and see if the heads still on. And what if it's not?
apache
And what if it's not? It can be very bad. I have seen nasty ongoing reaction that actually required surgical removal due to heads left in. For the sake of the £5 tick removers do it properly.
