caeser
After scouring the internet trying to find a rough value for a gun, I've decided to see if anyone on here can point me in the right direction to get an approximate value. Its a William Powell, side by side, boxlock , non-ejector, with 30" barrels. Its a decent name so it must have a bit of value. Can anyone help ? even just to advise as to where I might get a valuation. Edited April 13, 2012 by caeser
Mungler
I've got one of these on the rack for sale at Eastern Sporting - I don't think it's that expensive but the prices run from £500 to £2000.

caeser
Try ringing William Powells on 0844 573 0291. Do you think they'd be able to give me a true realistic value that it would sell for ?
HDAV
Well surely it's a start? Guns like that are worth what some one will pay and that's it as mungler says £500 - £2k Could try Diggory Haddock (sp?) JJsDad
I suspect no-one is going to give you an accurate valuation over the phone. Also you havent made clear whether you are looking for a part ex or cash. Before anyone can give you an idea on value they would need to inspect the gun in some detail. If its pitted or even out of proof, stock cracked or some other horror the value will plumet. Just because its got a well respected name doesnt mean much, at the end of the day its the condition that will decide its value. A lot of gun-shops are not over keen on English SBS non-ejectors for the simple reason most buyers are after an O/U. Have a look at "Gun Trader" or the "Holts Auctioneers" site, but be aware through an auction house of their commision

No one will give me an accurate valuation over the phone, without inspecting it. I was just really wondering if anyone could have given me a ballpark figure of what they're going for. I was thinking that, because its a very basic s/s then it wouldn't have a lot of interest. I think its mainly sidelock ejectors that people are after. Just for interest, I'll explain about the gun. It is in remarkably good condition. Barrels are perfect, bluing is really good, action is still crisp and the wood is very nicely grained walnut. The only flaw is a small chip in the stock next to the buttplate, and thats it. It is still in proof. Another thing that I suspect would go against it, is that it only has 2 1/2" chambers. But basically you can still feel that its a quality english side by side. I will speak to William Powell next week and ask their opinion. Blackpowder
You are quite correct about no gunsmith giving valuation unseen. What I do see on web sites for American gun dealers is that British guns- even non ejectors are sought after more in the States than at home. Blackpowder True, but unless it's special the import/export paperwork and fees are rarely worth the hassle. Is it nitro proof?
caeser
Yes it is in proof. Its a perfectly good usable shotgun, I'm sure someone will absolutely love it.
