decroyffe
I need your help again please to try and identify a problem. It's happened 3 or 4 times in the last few days. When I use the brake and need it again immediately, the pedal goes hard and the braking is very poor. Kind regards.
Schern
Knackered servo? Is it petrol or diesel? If petrol there should be a pipe leading from the inlet manifold to the brake servo and it could be perished and leaking. If diesel there may be an air pump somewhere to generate the vacuum for the servo.
Gordon R
Your power assistance - servo - is not working properly. As Schern has said Is it petrol or diesel?
bornfree
It sounds like the servo.try running the engine for a minute or two then turn off the engine and put your foot on the brake pedal.and listen for air leaking.you may need someone to hold the pedal down while you check. bornfree
bedwards1966
Your servo needs a vacuum (usually supplied from the intake manifold or a vacuum pump on your alternator), when it hasn't got enough vacuum you don't have any power assistance for the brakes, which is what you're finding. The problem is probably a split or collapsed hose leading to the servo unit (big black round thing attached to the bulkhead).
decroyffe
Yet again the advice is superb. At least I now know what to go and check, thanks I'll keep you posted. Ps, it's a diesel. Edited April 27, 2012 by decroyffe

Paul223
If it's the pipe you can sometimes hear the air leaking in but to be fair the 200tdi is quite noisey, have a listern anyway. Check the pipe from the brake servo from where it passes through the rubber gromet back to the vac pump mounted on the drivers side of the engine for splits or holes, if there is a small tee off check that pipe too. The vac pump itself can be worn and this may be the case. A vac guage is the easiest way to test and if no leaks where present i'd go for a pump
decroyffe
Thanks everyone. I'll get this last night shift out of the way then set about Monday. I may as well do the slave cylinder whilst I'm at it.
