Fisherman Mike
Hi guys computor tech help needed please. I was browsing the IN earlier on my Laptop looking for a cheap break in Italy and visited a website advertising 4 days in Florence...I clicked on a link which had a video of the hotel and it looked good.... vivaldi playing softly in the background.. All of a sudden up pops a screen saying my computor was going to be locked down for illegal media download a mesage came up then dissapeared to reveal a message saying the Metropolitan police had hacked into my PC and recorded my IP address and I had to pay £50.00 to unlock it... ? Is this genuine or a scam? I have BT net protect plus so Im suprised it got through if it is Malware. Ive tried to erase the screen message but it comes straight back up on start up. Any ideas how to get rid? Thanks as always. Mike

ack-ack
That sounds like an obvious scam. My scam-dar kicks in as soon as a request for money is made.
Mungler
Scam. I was in the off license up the road from work and they were talking about this. They phoned the plod and were told it's a virus. Apparently it links to an actual police page that says paedo / terror alert and your IP has been logged. Bet you **** your pants Edited May 3, 2012 by Mungler
Tod
malware or spyware installed when you opened the link probably, have you run your internet security software to wipe it, or try closing down completly and start back up.

Fisherman Mike
malware or spyware installed when you opened the link probably, have you run your internet security software to wipe it, or try closing down completly and start back up. The message covers the whole screen and I cant seem to find a way to shrink it to access other programmes. the only way to turn it off is to hold down the power button and reboot whereupon it comes straight back up. Even if I use C Alt Del and go into Task Manager it comes straight up again... Persistant blighter it is.

evo
re boot in safe mode as said above (pressing f2 on boot should get you there) ,,once booted install microsoft security essentials,, once installed run a full scan on your pc,this will find any virus,,malware or anything that will corrupt your pc,,when asked remove the virus or whatever then you will have nothing bothering you again as security essentials will monitor your pc for any **** trying to get it,,,,good luck with it and hope this helps cheers evo
activeviii
have you sorted it? If not, give PC the 3 finger. go to task manager >> then Processes >> look for a number. exe and end process. go on line and install the free malwarebytes and let if up date and run. it will find any thing you have and remove. next, just to make sure i would go to an online virus scanner, not BT, and run an on-line scan. any worm or virus will be found and deleted. next i would buy some paracetamol and send them to me in the-morning as i have just finished a cheap bottle of vino than needed drinking and i am one eye typing
