NIGHT SEARCHER
Hi all after shooting thousands of rats and using lots of different pellets and looking closely at shot rats. I have found that the two places that i shoot from i get a lot more instant kills at 30 to 35 yds than i do at 15 to 20 yds. All are head shot with a 12 ft lb .22 cal with night vision. Some of the rats start to try and crawl away that are head shot at close range. I have tried pointed - roundhead - hollow points pellets and they all have the same affect at close range a small entry and exit hole through the head. But the ones shot at distance have a small entry hole but a lot bigger exit hole. So 12 ftlb at close range is not giving the pellet time to do its job and spread causing a lot more damage (ie) dumping its kinetic energy into the rat. I have fitted a power adjuster to the rifle and have found that 8 ftlb for up to 20yds works the best and i turn it up to a max of 11.9 ftlb for shots out to 40yds. I have also treated myself to a .25 cal Hatsan doing 11.7 ftlb with 23 grain pellets it is devour-stating at close range head shots. But i have to use a lamp on it as the .22 has the night vision bolted to it. Max power is not always best. Hollow points work well at close range RWS superdomes work well all the time. pegasus bridge
not wanting to rain on your parade, but i doubt you would need to turn the power down to achieve a clean kill on a rat with a sub 12ftlb air rifle when head shooting. are you sure the rats that you have seen trying to crawl away had been hit in the head (brain area)? ChAoS
Have you tried RWS Hobbies? These work well for me at close range. Regards, Mark.
NIGHT SEARCHER
Read it fully PB of course i am sure they are all head shot in the brain i have even had bits of brain coming out of the exit hole. I have done tests with ballistic gel and 12 ftlb at close range the pellet dose not have time to spread. You get a small hole in and out 8 ftlb the pellet spreads leaving a big exit hole. So no rats jumping in the air when hit and twitching for 30 seconds. Just head shot instant kills. Whatever you shoot deserves a clean kill. I dont think that it would need to'spread'(which at 12ftlb is not going to be a great deal anyway
Catweazle
Hollow points really do expand, if only I could find an accurate one
