All, Im struggling to get the birds down on the deck.............

Decoying them in with wobblers and standard decoy patterns, they are flying in but pulling away......would be ok if I had a shotty,,,,but the wife has put a hold on that.......

Ive just ordered in a pigeon magnet..arrives tuesday....but anyone had GREAT success bringing the birds down on the deck....

Shooting over OSR stubble................

Any advice....

Could have had about 15 yesterday if I had a 12g. Ended up with 1...............

do you have plain decoys or flocked ones? as i've found that sometimes plain decoys will bring the pigeons in but as they go to land they notice something isn't right with the decoy, often they can see the sun reflecting off the decoy and of course it dosn't reflect off a real pigeon and so they will pull away, the flocked decoys are usually better as they look more realistic and won't shine in the light like plain plastic ones and so may convince them to land.

I've had them land when using plain decoys and must confess i do not own any flocked decoys, (mostly due to the price of them) but thought it might be a worthwhile suggestion as i've heard it can help to actually get them on the deck if their spooking easily.

Space is a bit of an issue...due to my shooting position I have to try and get them to land in on some short grass, this is under the trees, and they have to land in there otherwise I cant see them.

I usulay shoot prone, but have also tried sitting but still struggle to get a bead on them.

I am using a J or L type pattern. Have also one the V and Parrallel lines. They come in, have a flutter as if they are going to land, but look like they are struggling to find a place....

Think I will have to widen up the pattern. What gap do you leave between birds.:good:??

Got a rotorary coming this week.....hope that might have a bit of an impact....We will see...

I'm sure I read somewhere that pigeons will only land if they have a clear route of escape which is why they won't land towards a hedge or fence. Maybe try moving your decoy pattern around so the landing/kill zone is parallel with the trees you're trying to get them to land under. In my experience a rotary is unlikely to help you. They are great at pulling birds in but often the birds flare away from a rotary at the last moment, they don't like 'em when they get close.

My experience tells me they will land towards trees, hedges and landrovers just fine, they need the natural instinct to distrust to be overtaken by the level of intrest they see. Give them something they think is too good to be true and they just can't resist, no matter what the risks.

Just think about the clatter you hear shooting at ones and two's that come in, and not 10 seconds later something flightlinging in within earshot drops in like nothing happened.

Make it unmissable and they will come, if you build it, they will come

I think it doesnt help the time of year....I've also had problems bringing them down. I just use a couple of flocked decoys which earlier in the year worked great, but I think its either the abundance of food (there are LOADS of berries etc they enjoy munching on) or they are getting smarter.

The 30 odd we got Sat all had rape, wheat, sloe and tick in them, but we set up in a place we know they use for a last feed and got them anyway. Ask topgunners, I am not a patch on them but they will agree its all about knowing where they are and what they are doing, crucially at what time!

Observation is key, if you see them getting on it, then make a hide there

Am out on saturday if all goes to plan......rotorary came today so Ill have a go at a wide spread on the decoy off another section of the field that is a bit further away from the usual area..........If I cant see em, then whats th point........Ill move to a higher point and shoot down into the lower ground.........

Ill go and have a mooch around.......

Failing that I will put the pigeon stuff away and shoot rabbits for the rest of my hunting days..............did two in 15mins yesterday.................
