WelshLamb
They're all chain driven
lister1
I belive the 200tdi is belt driven. There is a toothed belt inside the front casing.
aga man
my old discovery had a 300tdi engine and it had a rubber timing belt the newer td5 engines are chain. took mine to a garage to get changed, i do my own repairs but noway on the cambelt cost about £160 from memory
mrwabbits
All depends what engine has been fitted. Both chain case and Belt cases have a gasket to seal. Best way to check if its chain or belt : Look up from underneath with a torch and see if there is a threaded drain hole at the bottom of the timing case (1/4 BSP size), if there is : it`s Belt not chain ps. That threaded drain/ breather hole is the same size as the clutch bell housing one,, Your supposed to screw a `Wading plug' in both when deep water + mud plugging. A lot of people either forget or dont bother to `plug' both wading holes, subsequently leading to early `belt' failure or clutch failure or both. Don`t forget to remove the plugs after wading event completion. Edited May 23, 2012 by mrwabbits
lister1
As its a 1993 it should be a 200tdi assuming its diesel, if its the V8 petrol then I think its a chain. Although so many engine conversions have been done it could be anything.
tomo-uk
200 tdis are belt driven mate are you thinking of doing it yourself because i believe i have a belt and the gasket set for doing it brand new ones!
Fib new
If it's a 200tdi it's belt driven; change it if you don't know when it was changed the last time. It's about the only thing that goes wrong with these engines. They are almost bomb proof if you make sure you change the belt about every 50,000 miles and put new oil in them every 6000 miles or so... lister1
The 200tdi is about the best engine in a landy. Mine was a 2.5 petrol but I changed it to a 200tdi.
tomo-uk
The 200tdi is about the best engine in a landy. i went from 200 tdi defender to 300 tdi discovery for comfort and it was the worst mistake ever
HDAV
Some 93 reg ex mod stuff could be 2.5D it took the mod a while to accept the newer engines IIRC
Fib new
200tdi's are great! Only thing is they make a hell of a noise! I've had a few of them over the years, but they all sound like someone is shaking a box of marbles:-) Even my seriesIII does not make that much noise :-
