Mr Majyk
ok ive been told a few times that putting a 5.56 in a gun chambered for 5.56 is dangerous due to chamber pressures etc ive never tried it myself but i was wondering if someone owned a gun chambered for 5.56 would it be safe to put a .223 through it due to it being a round which produces slightly lower pressures etc? Breastman
Basically yes, using .223Rem in a 5.56x45mm chamber is safe, doing it the other way around can be dangerous
Sharpshooter.123
Some say yes some say no. Personally I wouldn't try either

ScottCromwell2
I seen someone shoot 5.56 out of a .223 rem and because of the extra pressure the case swelled and wouldnt eject, however he has fired hundreds through it and this is the first time that that happnened
bedwards1966
See this. In reality unless the gun is in an unsafe condition I think it's quite safe, but it is generating extra pressures and isn't a good idea. The link has information by people who know more about it than I do though.
coyotemaster
Several AR type platforms here offer a "Wylde" chamber that accepts both rounds interchangeably. I would imagine this chambering would catch on worldwide if it weren't for all the .223 reamers 'floating' around. (sorry couldn't help myself- those who know about reamers will get it)
Mr_Logic
223 from a 5.56 no problem - I just got back from the USA where I spent a lot of time Playing with reloading for my brother's 5.56 smith and Wesson. Shoots a 53gr vmax very well!
Vince Green
At our club we shoot tons of cheap ex military 5.56 ammo through all our .223 rifles (when we can get it) and never had a problem or even noticed any difference. currently buying this stuff http://www.ammo-zone.co.uk/Detialed.aspx?ix=76&pg=&ss=5.56mm%20(.223) £78 for 200 its not bad Edited May 27, 2012 by Vince Green
boyscout1982
The 5.56mm NATO round has a thicker brass shell. Therefore like for like loads will fire at a higher pressure compared to .223rem ammunition. There is a lot of literature on loading .223rem into old NATO brass.
