cwb4321
Hello, I am looking for a air gun preferably under £50 just to shoot a few pigeons close range. Does anyone have any suggestions and could you tell me what power it would need to be? (fps, caliber, ft/p) Thanks
rimfire4969
Hi, For £50.00 you may find it difficult for an air rifle that produces enough power and fire tight enough groups for live quarry. Your best bet is secondhandand make sure whatever you end up with you can shoot groups no bigger than a 10p bit at whatever range you are going for live quarry at. Power i am no expert but i would think you want a rifle delivering over 10ftlbs and limiting your range accordingly. I am sure there will be people along with better answers but i hope this is a start for you.

(fps, caliber, ft/p) Thanks The only thing that might work would be the smk b2 i here thats basically the entry level hunting springer at about £44. I dont own one personally but if anyone on here does and uses it for pest control could you say so please! I think thats your best bet mate other than that just go into a gunshop and ask them they will probably have an idea.

secretagentmole
Do not buy a B2 for pest control, they have not got the power. Look for a secondhand XS or QB 78. That is Chinese CO2 powered rifle that is good enough for pest control You may be lucky and find a Hatsan 55 or 60, which is a spring powered rifle. Plenty have been sold. Do not get tricked into paying £70 plus for one as you can buy them new for under a hundred. They come with open sights fitted and are more than powerful enough to kill vermin. They are also sold as a Webley Stingray Mark 2 for twice the price!
chrisjpainter
mmm as above! i think the last estimate i saw was that you need an impact power of 3ft/lb to kill a pigeon. If someone can remember where i got this from, that'd be great! But bearing in mind the legal limit for a pistol is 6ft/lb AT MUZZLE, you have to be looking at an air rifle and a chinese copy is probably your best bet! Heard good things of the XS! check the backdrop to your shot though. if you're firing at 10 ft/lb you need to know where that pellet is going if you miss/if it goes straight throw the pigeon! Ceratinly if your going to get one test it because i had one that couldnt hit a barn door if the muzzle was up against it until after about 3 years when it corrected itself. Stoeger (or gamo cant remember) airguns are i think slightly over £100 but ive heard they are good.
secretagentmole
He should be able to pick up a secondhand Hatsan 55 or 60 for around the £50 mark, or save some more and buy a new one! Edited to add that even though I may have an HW100 and a BSA Super 10, I do still have a Hatsan model 60!
