Tod
your doing the right thing fella, too many people rush into shooting without any real idea. Any good coach will start at the grass roots and teach you about gun fit, mount and stance before ever firing a shot, once mastered you'll learn about differant kinds of lead on a bird. Some people pick it up straight away some dont, the main thing is enjoy it and dont worry about getting high scores all the time, if i were you id have a couple of lessons and whatever you do dont listen to the expert behind you at the clay shoot saying something like you where just behind that one cock, there at all the clay shoots  if i could give you one piece of advice never start with the gun in your shoulder, its not natural, you wouldnt go on a roughshoot with the gun always mounted waiting for something to get up would you, always have the gun just under your arm with your front foot pointing where you expect to kill the bird and the muzzle on the flightline of the bird pointing where you expect to pick it up then when you call for the bird and mount the gun you should be on it, swing through and fire. the main thing is enjoy it, dont get me wrong there are some very helpful and skilled shooters at clay shoots but while your learning stick to what the coach tells you. fergie
well all went well had a few shots as would normally, he advised that I should alter the starting position of my gun mount. he wants me to start gun up and it improved my speed no end, other than that he said it is just a case of getting out and doing it and that there was no need for me to waste my money paying him. as said above though not really the position to start in when out rough shooting

On Clays you will always be taught gun up until you have a bit of experiance behind you and then it will be gun down, getting your gun mount correct and correct everytime (muscle memory) is one of the basic steps to good consistent shooting Edited June 6, 2012 by bakerboy
